Such a bummer. Don't know what to think. He was a great guy and surfer. Funny and humble. Always surfing and just semi-recently retired. R.I.P. Sunrise Surfer Dan.

Best dude out always! As several said prior to my post, "I knew his car and if I showed up at that spot I knew I made the right choice for that days session!" ..

I still have his PR trip wave photo as my desktop screen saver on my work pc! My deepest condolences to the big homies familia and closest friends.. You will be missed Sunrise!

Always enjoyed surfing with Dan, so quiet, patient, and always catching the wave of the day. A true 2ndlight legend!

About a million years ago, Dan sold me this board from the for sale page on here. When I went and looked at I said, damn, that's beautiful, why are you selling? Too small he says. It's 9'6". We laughed. I bought it, still have it, gotta keep it now. Thanks Dan. A million smiles on this one.

I am sooo sorry to hear about Dan's passing.
He was such a cool person and fun to be around.
Always enjoyed seeing him in the water and surfing around him, and chatting on the boardwalk.
He bought a 9'0" board off me several years ago and I remember thinking there is no way he is going to hang on to that board very long! So Tom, your story sounds about right!

I believe he was in the Delta block house in 1997 when a Delta rocket was destroyed 1700' above the pad. That was quit the story.
Go in peace and thank you for the good memories, amigo.

Wow. What a terrible loss. In the past, he'd opened up his house to let this gulf coaster stay on occasions when the surf was too good to leave. Great guy with a great attitude.. HUGE hole in the lineup. May you Rip in Peace.

Please post whenever there's news about a paddleout for Dan...when I left for Virginia in 2002, probably surfed the most with this guy. We'll miss you, SS.

I got to surf with Dan at Pavones a couple of years ago, and remember how stoked he was to spend the afternoon on his laptop editing photos from the day. Then we got to surf together at the pier a lot and at 2L. He was such a great guy and Melody a good match. Who else paddles out more than she does? Dan, you will be missed in the lineup and I hope you catching some long lefts in heaven, with your bunnies hanging ten on the nose.
