About a million years ago, Dan sold me this board from the for sale page on here. When I went and looked at I said, damn, that's beautiful, why are you selling? Too small he says. It's 9'6". We laughed. I bought it, still have it, gotta keep it now. Thanks Dan. A million smiles on this one.

I am sooo sorry to hear about Dan's passing.
He was such a cool person and fun to be around.
Always enjoyed seeing him in the water and surfing around him, and chatting on the boardwalk.
He bought a 9'0" board off me several years ago and I remember thinking there is no way he is going to hang on to that board very long! So Tom, your story sounds about right!

I believe he was in the Delta block house in 1997 when a Delta rocket was destroyed 1700' above the pad. That was quit the story.
Go in peace and thank you for the good memories, amigo.

Goodness, this is such a huge hit for our community. I loved that guy. He was always there looking out for me when I was a grom and accompanied me, BigSpike, and Reggaemylitis to Costa Rica after I graduated from high school. The lineup will feel a lot emptier without him around. Devastated.

Years ago I posted a photo from San Onofre from my phone on 2L. Sunrise posted right back with "Paddleout Where are you???"

we met up on the beach moments later and had a nice all day session surfing Old Mans. That was cool.

Wow. What a terrible loss. In the past, he'd opened up his house to let this gulf coaster stay on occasions when the surf was too good to leave. Great guy with a great attitude.. HUGE hole in the lineup. May you Rip in Peace.

I got to surf with Dan at Pavones a couple of years ago, and remember how stoked he was to spend the afternoon on his laptop editing photos from the day. Then we got to surf together at the pier a lot and at 2L. He was such a great guy and Melody a good match. Who else paddles out more than she does? Dan, you will be missed in the lineup and I hope you catching some long lefts in heaven, with your bunnies hanging ten on the nose.

WOW RIP Sunrise! Echoing many thoughts already said here; pulling into whatever spot and seeing the wagon immediately knew two things: 1. I'm at the right spot. 2. I know who's catching the outside bombs today (hint not me, LOL). Many memories of surfing at OC back when it was the spot, da pier, and of course later HT, etc with Sunrise and crew.

I never formally met Dan or really even talked, but shared the lineup randomly through the years. He was one of those people who I was excited to see(regardless of the waves) because he embodied everything I know a surfer to be- surfing with someone like that made it a "surf session" and I will miss him RIP.

Dan was a good guy.
One of the first I met here.
Aggressive charging surfer.
Even as an bald old fart.
Those DP paddle outs.
He'd quickly lose me
I'd see him again.
Cruising by on a left.
Maybe even a second.
Before I even got out there.
Usually he was smiling.
We're gonna miss him.

TeeBird also asked me
to send his love to Dan's family.

I am stunned. Dan was the first 2ndlighter I surfed with all those many years ago. Met him in the water at a little peak just North of Tables; he had the lefts, I had the rights. A true Gentleman for sure. He will be deeply missed. I am bummed that I will miss any paddle out for him; I am stuck in Nashville until October 31 and I otherwise can not get ANY direct sunlight for the next couple years. But, my heart will be there for him.

Just heard about this in the water this morning. Dan was one of the best.

As much as the reason for this thread saddens me, there is some pleasure in seeing so many of the old names. There are a lot of good folks on this board.

Yea for sure!! He would have been super happy to have surfed his swell at the playground last week Can't believe I've been posting since 2003 - time flies!

I was a 14 year old GROM when I met Dan in the lineup almost 20 years ago. He was one of a few locals who always looked out for me in the water, would straighten me out if I got out of line, and had a huge influence on me about what it meant to be a SURFER. He even let me tag along as one of the guys to Costa Rica at 16.

I never come on here (Thanks Chuck for getting me logged back in) - but for whoever cares - he had a lasting impact on me and played a positive role at a formative time in my life.

Somebody said it above - if I was ever back in town and saw him in the lineup - I knew I was in the right spot.

Although I have sadly moved away and don't check in very often, I was so sad to read of Dan's passing. I can't believe it's been almost 20 years since I met Sunrise when I first started surfing. I never met anyone with more stoke. A genuine good and honest heart and inspiration to everyone he met, as shown by all of these wonderful posts. My most sincere condolences to Melody and his family. I am very sad I won't be there for his paddleout, but I know Dan will get these messages and good vibes up there. Rest and surf on in peace. Collin

I know, it is sad. I surfed Hightower yesterday and that was the last spot I saw Dan a few months ago. I didn't know a single person out surfing. It's always nice to see someone you know and Dan was that guy typically.

A small photo tribute for a great friend... always happy and smiling!

so very sorry for your loss Melody...i always pictured you two riding off into the Sunset together.

Dan's new leash!

Of course a little lunch with friends after a session...

or dinner!

With his Favorite Surfer Girl

Surfed everyday, any place and any size!

Outside at The pier on a big day!

A shore pound on a sloppy day!

or by himself on a rainy day

Always looking for waves!---- even if i had to take you to the airport at 4AM to catch a plane to Fuji or was it Indonesia?

Who else would have his garage door painted with a surf scene but Mr Sunrise Surfer!

But most of the time Dan was where the best surf was for that day

Until our paths cross again old friend...Wax up that board!

...find us a spot with warm water, offshore winds and perfect waves

Yes, that was a beautiful photo collection of Mr. Dan and his surfing passion, B.
You the man, and thank you very much for putting that together.

Thanks, Burry and everyone! It has been a very difficult time. Saturday Dan will be released back to the sea where he loved to be. Thank you for all your kind words, texts, messages, and prayers. They are very much appreciated. Melody
