Trump got lucky. He had the best 'free' campaign anyone could ever wish for, butteremails. Even foreign countries helped him out with it. They tried something similar next round but people saw through it. He botched the pandemic response and incited an insurrection and he tanked. That's all there is to it.

2) that third-party votes were only 2% of the 2020 total, but 6% of the 2016 total; i.e., more people who might have gone 3rd party voted against Trump (by voting for Biden) instead.

Different interpretations of a figure of speech? What I mean is, Trump didn't have to try very hard to win, just not fuck up. It would have taken monumental effort for a normal person in Trump's situation to lose the election, but it came naturally to him. He could have just worn a straight-jacket and ball gag, done or said nothing, and let the country run on cruise control and still won. Every time he moved his lips, it cost him a vote. People showed up. Voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote campaigns appear to have paid dividends in terms of popular-vote and electoral-vote results.

I usually voted R, and occasionally 3rd-party for Pres; had never cast a D vote for Pres until 2020. Really had to hold my nose, but it was a vote against Trump. I'm quite conservative or libertarian on most issues, but not the same on people.

Trump was an incompetent political leader. I have relatives who know him personally, and they say he's not as bad a person as he's portrayed. But he had zero credentials to be a political leader or public servant of any kind.

I watched it a while ago and again this morning and it is a good review of how the GOP got to its current state.

The GOP really needs to do some soul searching and become a party of principles. Where they are at now is not a recipe for long term success. Myself (who voted for Reagan) and many of my conservative friends have left the GOP in the past few years because of their lack of solid policy and principles...they are more interested in their reality show and not so interested in being a real governing party for this country.
