Banging early season snow in the Wasatch and the Rockies this year. Utah experiencing its best early season snowpack in 20 years. Most resorts opened early and the numbers are impressive. All areas around Park City in excess of 100" so far with the resorts in little Cottonwood Canyon like Brighton showing a mind blowing 132" year-to-date total. Base around 50" and 15" of fresh powder on Monday have locals jumping for joy. Anyone with booked trips upcoming cant help but be excited about this. I personally cant wait to bring my exquisite style of old-man slow-boarding to the slopes around PC. EPIC pass for 3 days for myself and the wifey was 270 bucks each or 91 bucks per day which sounds like a lot but believe me its a discounted rate due to early purchase. After the 4th of Dec. it will set you back 181 $$$ bucks a day, each. That's insane. Make sure you rent an AWD or 4X4 vehicle if driving up from SLC. You be glad you did. Upcoming forecast looks dreamy with some light snow finishing up this week before another blast next weekend. Anyone else heading for some white? Let it snow!

The snow really is looking good. The PNW corner of the US had a weird dry spell in November and looks to be making up for it, fast.
Oregon coast is back to its usual winter messy 10-15 ft.
Early hint to book whitewater activities in, say, Idaho.

yeah, some of my buddies are going to China Peak this weekend for the goods. It's a smaller (and cheaper) resort near Mammoth. My brother will be boarding at North Star in Tahoe although I think Kirkwood would have a lot more pow. All my gear was lost last March by American Airlines so I'm going to have to pony up for some new gear. I'm looking at the Burton "Skeleton Key" 158 for a directional surfy ride. I like Wyoming since it tends to be a little colder than Utah.

Wolf Creek was my favorite. It's been years. I wonder if I have forgotten how to do it?

I'm sure you'll remember, but the unused muscles will make sure you pay for putting them on the back burner while the other muscles got to surf.

Are there any back-doors for getting cheap, last-minute airfare to UT or CO? I used to snag leftover seats to UT on some seasonal, semi-charter airline called Sun Country. But I haven't seen a peak-season ticket to the snowy vertical paradise for under $500 in years.

PNW. Everything to the south is likely to have another year of drought, despite recent heavy snow. NOAA climate

And just back from a week in in Park City. Snow almost every day with heavy snow all 3 days we spent on the mountain. My favorite conditions, although the wife would have liked more sun and blue skies. I love getting snowed on! Between 15-20 inches fresh for the week we were There. Early season so nothing even close to crowded. Ramping up from here on out for sure. My time share at Marriot Summit Watch sits right across the street from town lift with a picture perfect view we cant get enough of. Many hours of down-time spent window gazing at folks getting on the lift and heading up. I will never be a "good" rider. Started too late and only go once a year. But that doesn't mean I don't thoroughly enjoy my time. I'm "good" enough to carve down the slopes, heel to toe, and just imagining a long perfect wave. Know my limits and accept and appreciate the skills I have and knowing when I feel uncomfortable (ie: too fast!) I do a turn and bleed off speed to slow down. Seen many people brought down on stretchers, and this trip an ambulance chopper landed right at base camp at the Canyons to medi-vac some poor shredder out. I barely ever fall and when I do I take it as a sign of fatigue and throw in the towel for the day. Don't need to snap an ankle or break an arm and be out of the ocean for an extended time as a result. Anyway, go if you can. This is the year. Heard several times comments such as "lived here my whole life and this is the best early season ever". PC at 148", Solitude 177", Snowbird 212", Wow!!!

Snow is good news for the Great Salt Lake, now at an incredibly low level, which threatens the great Utah snow machine--evaporation from the lake feeds snow clouds.

Flooding in the Central Valley (notably Davis, home of a University of California campus, which was without electricity). Another "river" storm is expected later this week. The precipitation could shut down, as it did in 2021 after a promising start, but right now, it's looking good. Annual flowers are popping up in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park near San Diego.

And in the mountains, too much snow? Several resorts in Utah had to impose a rare protocol called an Interlodge. An Interlodge event is when snow levels are so great and avalanche danger is so extreme that patrons and employees are confined to resort buildings. Usually affecting the Little Cottonwood Canyon side (Snowbird, Alta) access to the resorts via 210 is shutdown and travel outside buildings and even being in your car is illegal. This weekend all personnel were pulled off the mountain as one such event occurred. They usually only last a day or so until things get "manageable". Locals consider it a rite of passage, and look forward to enjoying the powder of what they call the greatest snow on Earth. Measuring snowfall in feet instead of inches right now with more to come...

Alta had heavy precip in Dec. I think those who booked summer raft trips on Utah's rivers should have fun.

The ski industry in Japan can apparently arrange for foreigners to come and work for the snow season. They're extremely short of help.

I was looking at a fresh NY Times story on Japan's ski resorts. It mentioned a Swedish guy who is doing the seasonal thing as a driver, with free slope privileges. The story noted that the resorts' clienteles are highly international, and of course Japan is now opening up after covid. Their story was from Honshu, but there's a bunch in beautiful Hokkaido.

The NY Times story, Dec. 30, was reported from the Niseko area on Hokkaido, between Hakodate and Sapporo. Beautiful area. I've been to both cities. This looks like agood link.
