Florida has the dirtiest lake (Okeechobee), so why not match it with the dirtiest river?

Funny that were still paying a 1/2 cent sales tax to clean up that mess. Maybe someone can tell me why billionaires can't clean up after themselves?

That's a huge amount of water. I wonder if this is the deluge water used to dissipate heat & sound during launches.

Oculus is FDEPs online file system. It's public and you can search it but it's clunky. Not phone friendly so i may fire up the laptop to search. I think it may be Industrial Wastewater Permit FL0A00007. Oculus is here: https://depedms.dep.state.fl.u...itlist?action=goToPage

"Blue Origin OLS Manufacturing Complex currently operates facilities with an industrial wastewater discharge. The facilities dispense conditioned water to the North Campus stormwater management system which discharges to surface waters. The water, which contains wastewater related to industrial activities, is discharged to surface water to alleviate unnecessary burden on the sanitary sewer serving the facilities." Got it. Cooling water blowdown, water purification waste, more? The Complex is on Space Commerce Rd. Wastewater discharges to their onsite stormwater system that overflows to IRL. PM me an email address and I'll send you a copy.

Really? This cannot be good. ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off. |

It's not uncommon. Spacex has a similar permit for their manufacturing complex. Lots of negative comments and concerns at the public meeting during comment period a few years back. Didn't change a thing.

Just for fun, if Blue discharges total nitrogen at their permit limit (3mg/l) and flows 0.5mgd all year (they won't) that's about 4800 lbs of nitrogen a year. If you want to know how much it costs (you! 1/2 cent sales tax!) to keep that amount of nitrogen out of the IRL, take a look at the Save Our Indian River Lagoon project list. Ugh. https://www.brevardfl.gov/docs...pdf?sfvrsn=526fff29_13

What's the raw water source, maybe seawater?
No salinity or resource impacts from withdrawal and discharges? What's the industrial process, just cooling? Or, are they picking up contaminants in their process? Half a billion a day?! |
|
|
|

|
|

At that level, it has to be ocean water. At a minimum, that means the salinity doesn't match that of the IRL. Now add contaminates.

Too far from the ocean to be seawater i think. Well or potable. Don't see a consumptive use permit for well. Because they're cleaning it up, it's probably potable source. Wastewater Permit is written overcapacity (typical) so they will never have a discharge exceedence. Plus, if potable, half a million gals a day would be a pretty big water bill, even for a billionaire.

They are pulling that much from a public source, then dumping it in the river?
I think excess salt would be better than chlorinated fresh water. Aren't we already having water battles with Orlando in that area? ------------------------- I was right. Edited: 12/07/2025 at 12:17 PM by Cole |

I think Cocoa's capacity is around 100-120 mgd. My guess is if they have a customer for another 0.5 mgd, they'll sell it to them.

What are they using the water for in the first place? I understand cooling and whatnot during launches, but they don't launch on a daily basis. AI cooling? Robot army? WTF?

Joe, although i appreciate your passion, we're already a bit close to the edge of the surf page talking water quality. Don't get us sent to NSR detention hall. Besides, Bezos owns Blue. And Cole, it's Bezos' private indoor wave pool that uses all that water. He dumps the pool after each use to get the peepee out.

Seems wasteful and likely harmful to the salinity levels near the point of discharge.
Why not reuse it elsewhere rather than discharging to the estuary? (Assuming this is just cooling water that's not collecting industrial contaminants, which would be even more harmful to the estuary) |

Note for record, see how simple it is to find the permitting docs? Hahaha! Good luck! The announcement doesn't even reference the permit #.
