I have had great success using IFAS's recipe for "Insect and Disease Control" on aphids, scale and sooty mold recently - "2 Tbsp cooking oil + 2 TBSP baby shampoo in 1 gal water. Spray every 5-7 days. Make sure to water the day before and do not spray in the heat of the day or full sun." I had to spray for about 4 weeks in a row (I had some bad issues with Asian scale), but, it took care of it. It looks like I am getting some issues again, so I am going to start spraying again, but, I sure feel comfortable using this as opposed to insecticides. (Plus, my hair now has a real pretty sheen to it, too!)
