I actually thought there was no way he could get reelected after orchestrating and then defending an attack on the Capital. It turns out America in not only gullible, we also have very short attention spans.

He did end his last term with a 33% approval rating for a reason, and yet a majority of Americans thought it was a good idea to give him a second go.
