The BIG BOSS Takes a Liking to Nel

First, I need to preface this for you to separate the "before and after" of the Boss's involvement.

Twenty-five years ago I worked at a local defense contractor as a buyer. I became friends with one of the electronic techs, we will name him "Joe". He was a retired Air Force "lifer" with 20-plus years of service. One day we were talking about this-and-that and I mentioned that Nel had been in the Air Force (AF) at Patrick and that she had been the first woman assigned to "Them". Joe got a look on his face and asked "THEM ?". Yes. He uttered an expletive. He went on to say that he had been assigned to Patrick and the Cape many times during his career and that he had had a Crypto Clearance. He said that as far as he knew he had just about the highest clearance around those parts, being that he maintained and repaired all of the "crypto" kind of equipment and such. He said that he had thought that he had "seen it all" at the Cape and Patrick. But, one day he got an odd request that he should show up at a certain building with his gear for a briefing! He knew where it was at and otherwise knew that there was nothing there to "fix". He gets there and is taken into a room that had AF personnel, men in Dark Suits and armed guards! They sit him down and begin "briefing" him about where they are going to take him and what needs fixing. He thought that all of this was quite odd, and what really set it all off was when one of the AF types told him in very pain language; "Do Not Avert Your Eyes"! What? He was pretty sure that he was cleared for anything around but, he had never been told to not avert his eyes! Heck, he had had less hassle going down into nuke ICBM silos!

So, they put him into the middle of the rear seat of a car, with an armed guard seated on each side, and off they go. They get to the location and he is somewhat surprised because it is a well-known building and, as such, is pretty "public". He'd been in it to fix all sorts of various equipment and really could not understand what all the "security" was about. He did not know that "Them" were located there. They take him in past the normal "authorized only" entrance, then past a "you really better know what you're doing here" door, and then they get to a door that has its own armed personnel and signage that is pretty much "skull and crossbones", otherwise known as "Shoot To Kill". The one guy is still telling him to not avert his eyes! It's starting to sink in and then he realizes that the two armed guards that are with them, one on each side of him, have their holsters unbuttoned and their hands are on their grips!!! They are not there to protect him, they are there to protect against him! He said that he had never been so scared in his life. They get into the vault and everything is covered in black cloth, all except the chairs. The one guy unbuttons a bit of the black canvas and says "this is what you are to repair, and Do Not Avert Your Eyes"! When everything is fixed they leave and return to the original "briefing" building where he is debriefed with all of the standard "you were never there", 'we were never here", etc, just like in the movies. He signs a new security oath and he's free to go.

Well, Nel worked in that vault. She typed like a bandit on her IBM Selectric typewriter and at the end of the day, , , , the platens and print balls were removed and put into a double lock safe that was locked by two Officers with two separate keys. The ribbons were removed and incinerated under witness of an Officer and an armed guard! Every day. Just business as usual in the vault, even though it was already a "shoot to kill" security zone.

So, those are examples of the "normal" security sphincter factors involved. Then the General got involved in Nel's life.

The unit had a Commanding General, although he was "never there" and otherwise I assume most people in the unit did not know him. Unit locations had a O-5 or O-6 in command. When he was there he was in a civilian "suit and tie" and usually had a defense contractor ID. His regular office was at a place called "Langley". For the most part, Nel never wore a uniform on base and also had a "fake" defense contractor ID.

So, anyway, I have to assume that the General was aware of the "discomfort" that a woman had caused in the unit and he decided to meet Nel. It was just two civilian contractors having a discussion. It came to be that the General decided that he could use someone with Nel's qualifications and clearance. So, she more-or-less became his "administrative assistant" when he was local and/or otherwise at Langley when he needed her to be there. This was all fine-and-dandy but, Nel's clearances needed to be greatly upgraded so that she was cleared for everything on the General's desk! The General was involved in things that the local commanders had no knowledge of. This started Nel's journey into the Black. She ended up traveling to all sorts of places and doing all sorts of things, most of which never happened and otherwise never existed.

I'll leave this chapter with this: Early on in her experience at (I assume) Langley "something" of worldly importance happened or was about to happen, or what-ever. Nel was pretty concerned and asked the General if the President knew and/or what the President was going to do or say about it. Then, right out of the movies (not sure of the exact words said), , , , "Get in here. Close the door. Sit down. I'm only going to say this once and I never want to hear another word about it! The President is a civilian, he Has Not Been Cleared".!!!!! Nel said that that was the moment she really understood what she was involved in.

Here is the flight suit they gave her to wear when they rushed her, and a Major, to SE Asia in the back seat of F-4s, non-stop. An "A" Team then took them into Laos. They were flown back to Patrick in F-4s the next day. Me: "What???". Her: "When the call came in I was the only person available that was cleared for the mission". This suit was the only thing they had in the Ready Room that fit her.
