>> MEXICO CITY - Three bodies recovered in an area of Mexico's Baja California state are likely to be those of the two Australians and an American who went missing last weekend during a camping and surfing trip, the state prosecutor's office said Saturday....<< Outside Rosarita. I surfed there and hung out at Papas and beer. The place feels like it's outside the law or accountability. Murdered and thrown down the well. Damn. ------------------------- "One of the reasons why propaganda tries to get you to hate government is because it's the one existing institution in which people can participate to some extent and constrain tyrannical unaccountable power." I surfed there about 25 years ago, and ate the best lobster taco known to man.
It was interesting because alcohol sales were banned on election day when I was there. And now this. So sad to see such demise that close to the US border. |

Mexico's a mixed bag, the only country with each state given its own rating by the State Department.
NY Times has a dismal story on disappeared people in the State of Baja California, citing this source, Elementa Desaparecer in Baja California

People die everywhere all the time. It sucks but its a reality. Going to southern Mex in 2 weeks. Not even worried. Don't let fear drive your life. However always be cautious as you would in New York or any other large American city.

You can include places like rural Ohio and West Virginia in that warning, too. ------------------------- I was right. |

I had some friends in Baja about 20 years ago that had to run into the surf in the middle of the night to save their lives. The guys shooting at them had stripes down the side of their pants and must have had lots to drink to shoot that many times and not hit them. They shivered for hours in the surf until the banditos got tired and left with everything they owned. They were reluctant to call the Federales to report it because, after all, they had just been there. They had to have money wired to a western union and a series of payments until they got back to Rosarita, where they had help and got back to San Diego after. They were lucky.

This is so very sad.
However, In 1971, my friend Duh and I drove down that way from Newport Beach. Got down around K-59 and San Miguel. Pull over on a cliff overlooking a nice point break. Had to walk down in a canyon with garbage. Dangerous with glass and a horrible rotting smell. The waves were stellar. Shoulder head or so, Glassey. This was in September, and we were skinning it. Starts getting around sundown. We decide to just camp here. We had a small tent, sleeping bags, hot dogs, baloney sandwiches and the like. We also had a case of ice cold cans of Coors. I had come to Cali around 2 weeks prior to that. I brought a suitcase with a key of Columbian gold buds. This is how I financed most of my surf travels. So we are getting cozy. 2 other groups of gringo surfers also settled in nearby. We shared the bud with the other visitors. so we are all feeling pretty Good .Not quite dark yet. 3 locals on horseback come riding up. Dude says we need to leave. I had him a joint. He whips out a lighter and fires up. He hands it to the other 2. Dudes get down off the horses. We get everyone a hot dog and a beer. More joints. dude says again we need to leave. I say to him: Diaz dollares para la noche? He says: buena, por supresto. So I say that that deal includes the other 2 groups. Dudes are like buena, buena. We stayed 3 nights. Ran out of beer. dudes came back every night for $10 and some joints. ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off. |

All these mentions of how horrible mexico is - yet people still travel there, and in the meantime I have a wonderful home on the beach in El Salvador that nobody wants to visit because they think they're going to get murdered, yet since Bukele has taken office El Salvador now has a lower murder rate than most countries - including the US.
