Talking about last swell, T.S. Alex proved many forecasters wrong and provided swell for Saturday thru Thursday. With Sunday thru Thursday glassy mornings. Swell was bigger on Thursday than Wednesday. This goes against conventional wisdom that we never get swells from a weak disturbance especially if it is moving away from us. I think a lot of us thought once the Low pressure moved out into the Atlantic that it fizzed out, but it actually almost got to hurricane strength near Bermuda. This is more than likely why Thursday was bigger than Wednesday. Also, never saw swell period over 11 seconds on the canaveral buoys. Thursday seemed more like a 12 to 14 second period swell and the NE angle was perfect for SattyBe.

From recent article:
"After flirting near hurricane strength Sunday night, Tropical Storm Alex's wind speed declined to 60-mph winds Monday afternoon, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center."

Looking at Sunday Stuff and having my muscles finally recovering from surfing 5 days in row and starting to itch to surf again:

Weather models are showing something spin off of Hatteras and move out to Bermuda and staying weak. Mid-week or later. Something to watch. Also, long range models are showing a possible hurricane yucatan/Gulf of mex next week/weekend.

This Sunday eve, stormsurf buoy forecast (41009) has a spike up for 6/20. Too far away in time to say for sure. But, i'm glad to see that.

NWS marine forecast off of Hatteras:

SYNOPSIS FOR MID ATLC WATERS
A cold front will move slowly SE over
the area later Mon into Wed night as developing low pressure
moves E along the front Tue into Tue night
. High pressure will
build SE over the region Wed through Thu, then shift E of the
area Thu night and Fri.

NHC has this tidbit in their Sunday discussion:

Looking ahead,
winds and seas may increase over the south-central Gulf by Fri as
low pressure possibly approaches from the northwest Caribbean.

Edit: Corrected date to 6/20 was typed wrong 9/20.

In June, this may be the best you could hope for:

From Surfline:

June 26

4-6ft+
Chest to 1ft overhead
4-6ft
Chest to overhead
Moderate short period waves from the ESE. Very strong ESE winds with very choppy, blown out conditions.

Magicseaweed/Monday shows on period swell model: NE Long period swell showing for the 18th, 19th. But, what will be the size??? Long way out but models show the low move off hatteras and quickly move out to Bermuda and flare up some. Maybe a NE long period swell from that.

JUNE 26th...That is bold to put that out this far away in time! Wowsa.

For Monday, Stormsurf virtual buoy does show a big spike on June 26 and took yesterday's as I mentioned above, June 20th, away.

The long range models, giveth, and take away.

Not June, but at least Nov-March or so, there's "cheap" (meaning $860 or so) flights, Fort Lauderdale to Cape Town. Check Google Flights. Of course that's summer for them, and ironically enough, their water's colder in their summer. Camps Bay. Best time to visit is likely August. It's spring and the botanical gardens are spectacular.

Was it a reverse hurricane swell that has never happened in my 40 plus years of surfing or a wind line farther south created by the pressure gradient?

yeah that was weird, but in a very good way for a change, much much better than anyone expected. That past Sunday afternoon with Alex the local buoy was reading 3 ft 8 secs and the wave period showing at the beach had to have been 10 or 11 sec. Also same on Wed am, the buoy data didn't jive with the bigger/better swell showing at the beach. And then last Sun aft and Mon am the buoy was reading 1.6 ft and 10/11 sec, that typically gives us waist high LB heaven here, but it was very small. Not sure if the data recording equipment or software has changed or if its something else.

Cue shot of Jim Carrey saying "So you're saying there's a chance?"

What is in the water this morning? Brown, slimy, stinky, with a bunch of nasty particles. Was as gross as I can remember. Caught two and rushed home to disinfect in the pool. Was like surfing in a toilet bowl. Weird because yesterday afternoon and evening was clean and "normal"...

Yes, some kind of red/brown algae soup with stuff mixed in. Been seeing it since we had that south wind and swell week before last. Yuckie. Coastal eutrophication?

It was fun today at north jetty for me and few hundred of my closest friends. Still had a blast. Started off a bit slow but picked up as the day went on.

Swapped out the log for the shortie today. A good sandbar makes all the difference.
