Asahi Shimbun (newspaper). It was quite a spectacle. Our tour group's last stop on a two-week trip three weeks ago. I'll have some photos. Been busy with a little light show at Heathcote Gardens in Fort Pierce.

The tour has about an 18 year history behind it. I was a member of the Portland Japanese Garden when I lived there. After I left, a board member set up a garden tour to Japan, largely in hopes of helping others understand "real" gardens and how the Portland one was "authentic." I joined that first tour; it was a success and morphed into a series of Japan tours that went all the way from Sapporo to Iriomote, south of Okinawa and east of Taiwan (beautiful Satakentia palms, which thrive in southern Florida, are from there). This was the last in the series, focused on the Inland Sea, with the last day at the shrine to the first Tokugawa Shogun in Nikko, then a porcelain museum and the flower park. More pics are on the way. The country is reasonably accessible. Anyone who can navigate New York, Washington D.C., or for that matter Costa Rica, can have a fine time. Air fares tend to be kind of high, but right now the exchange rate is really good--making US hotel prices and such look really bad.
