its pretty close to the inlet, but there are several places that get good waves in vero itself (or used too, I havent actually surfed there myself in about 10 yrs)

Where are you moving from?
Vero has some surf spots, but if you long board you'll probably want to travel south to Ft. Pierce inlet for decent waves. There are a few spots, but I think you'll have to check it out yourself. Mostly shorebreak closeouts, but occasionally it goes off when the other beaches suck.
Here's an example of the closeout:

About 3 weeks ago was one of those occasions.

Most everything from the sebastian inlet south to ft. pierce is limited in size by an outer reef that busts up any way overhead swell... but there is one place right in V.B. that a gap in the reef exists, and on a northern swell, it holds huge swell and breaks 'like pipeline'! I'll leave it to you or the friendly locals to help you figure out the sweet spot. The pier was lost in hurricane season 2004... used to be most popular. Bahamas block a lot of swell you might have expected to get there, but refraction also sends in some goodies from time to time. It's a fun area to surf for sure, but not quite as many surf days/ year as brevard.

Vero is located between 2 great inlet's Sebastian to the north (south swells) & Ft.Pierce (north swells) to the south

Sept 5. (Burry contributed to this thread. I finally met him yesterday. Worth the wait). That day, I was able to sneak out of work for lunch. Watched the South Beach fun from the lifeguard station. Pity no one was doing photos or videos. Not every day do you have big, clean surf so close to more-or-less dry sand.

You'll often be making the 20 minute drive to the inlet....

I grew up Surfing in Vero.

The best spot to surf is the southern end of South Beach to Seahorse.
Tracking Station Park (Indian River Shores/Vero Beach City Line) used to be good, however the sandbars shifted.

The best spot in Vero however is at a sub-division known as Seagrove. However it has a guard gate and no place to park. Unless your willing to walk 2 miles down the beach, stick with South Beach.

Riomar Reef is a dead reef (lots of Urchins) but has some long rides during the right swell.

All in all Vero usually gets some great swells & decent peaks. Good luck to you.

Your worst day surfing is still better than you best day working.

South Beach is close but frustrating. The lifeguarded section is unique for its shorepound; the beach is less nasty a bit farther south. Worth walking to the end of the row of condos. When there's a good swell, you get to see that there's impressive surfboard and bodyboard competence. Also broken boards.
Riomar reef is frustrating--on a nice day, from a distance, it looks lovely. It's the most spectacular of Vero's limestone outcrops (not true reefs, but home to lots of interesting critters). They shape the local coastline and generally "protect" the shoreline from surf. South Beach lacks a reef, apart from a lot of huge limestone rocks that were planted offshore a few years ago as environmental mitigation for covering a reef somewhere else.
If time allows it, north to the Inlet or south to the Other Inlet!

LMAO! Come on, SurferRob, Pipeline? I've surfed some sick waves at Seagrove, but I would not compare it to Pipe. I grew up charging closeouts at South Beach, Dumpsters, Riomar, The Pier, The Boardwalk, Track, Conn and Seahorse. All of them closeout, but will occasionally go off with the right angle. Mama G's secret spot is the best break between both inlets, but it's a real board-breaker. I used to spend a lot of time surfing around Avalon and PV Martins, both spots are usually smaller than everywhere else, so the crowds are usually zero, but that area is very sharky. Bob's right about the night life, The Patio got shut down a few months ago and everyone packs into Riverside or The Longbranch. It was fun while it lasted, but I'm glad I moved out of there . . .

It's not the board that counts, it's the way you use it.

I live by the Moorings and Surf Vero and FoPo

Vero can break AMAZINGGG! You just have to find it at the right time... if in doubt go to Fort Pierce.. You can almost always find a good line.

The Vero Pier was destroyed way back but now its definitely back. That's where I always surf.

The End. :]

lol I'm not da one blowing up what used to b a secret spot when I lived in vero for work mid '90's... but anyhow yeh south beach right in front of the lifeguards who were calling us out of their friggin zone in fifteen foot top to bottom barrels. sure the exit strategy was a little scary! Nobody who was there would argue with me or my broken 6'1". seems is was march or april swell, around Easter.

Hahah What's there to tell. Our town is so small they'll find out all the possible spots in a week haha!

I hate the pier now though.. People are kooks there. 95% of them cant even surf. And the sand bar has gotten worse since the construction pier was taken out :/

But yeah they wont surf here anyways... there's a reason it's called "Zero Beach"

The pier was best years ago, along with Tracking Station, and it's not the sandbars that have shifted, rather, the 2nds reef has grown and prevented swells from reaching the inside breaks. Remember when JC Beach used to go off, right in front of Mash Hoagie's? It should be noted however, that Vero has a few select spots that do break, even on smaller swells. The locals know.
