A 'Livid' Texas Governor Greg Abbott: 'The Status Quo Is Unacceptable'
By Brandon Morse | May 27, 2022 5:36 PM ET

Texas Governor Greg Abbott held a press conference at the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school where an atrocity was visited upon 19 innocent children and two teachers by an 18-year-old with a rifle.

Abbott, accompanied by Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin, announced that everyone who lost their lives at the hands of the shooter will have their funeral costs taken care of. He also announced that mental health services will be available for the community for those who ask for them.

There is also a site that has been set up where donations can be made that go straight to the people of Uvalde called onestarfoundation.org.

After announcements had been made about the resources being directed toward Uvalde, Abbott took questions. The initial question revolved around whether or not Abbot knew that officers had waited for an hour before moving on the shooter. Abbott revealed that the information that initially was handed to him about the shooting was inaccurate. When he gave his remarks, he was reciting what was told to him from the get-go, and he is "livid" about the fact that he was misled.

Greg Abbott says that he was "misled" by law enforcement officials about what happened in the Uvalde shooting. He says they did not tell him that officers stood in the hallway for an hour while the shooting occurred. pic.twitter.com/6PTBnSj3SW

Abbott also vowed that law enforcement would earn the trust of the public from this point going forward and that includes an in-depth investigation into everything that happened in Uvalde.

One reporter asked if any of the legislation Abbott signed into law, like constitutional carry, would be rolled back. Abbott made it clear that none of the laws signed by him in the past session had any intersection with the laws that were broken by the shooter. He also made it clear that new laws would address healthcare for gun crimes, mental health, and school safety.

"The status quo is unacceptable," said Abbott. "This crime is unacceptable. We're not gonna be here talking about it and do nothing about it. We will be looking for the best laws that we can get passed to make our communities and schools safer."

Abbott went on to make it clear that mental health would be a focus going forward for Texas healthcare.
