I've gotten two calls from very wealthy people that asked me what they could do for their lawn guy. He's been here twenty years and got a tax identification number and paid taxes. He's got American citizen kids but the oldest is only 17 and my immigration attorney buddy says they can't sponsor him until they are 21. He can't get a license and he drove to work. He got stoped and three FHP troopers waited for ICE to come get him from the side of the road. His crime was misdemeanor driving with no license. Hardly the criminals.
The other one is more of a grounds keeper. The woman who spoke to me is the very impressively preserved third wife and her very rich husband defers to her now because he's closer to 80 and she's just past 60. She wants to pay my buddy whatever his fee is and she doesn't care how much it costs ( her rich husband) and they will hang with him for the long haul. The only problem is that it will take five years and even after that he could still be forced back to his home country and forced to apply from there, and still be denied. Most of the immigration judges are overworked and very much following the directive of the President to get huge volumes of people deported.
The point is that the huge support to deport the people that do the jobs Americans won't do is now facing the consequences of this ill conceived plan on a personal level. Suddenly it's not such a hot idea. All of the sudden, some red hats are scratching their heads at the stacked deck they are just learning about now. How can this be? They ask. Has it always been this dysfunctional? Is this by design? Yep.
