I haven't seen this posted yet. Really sad story. We've probably met the guy that died. He worked at the toll booth at Sebastian Inlet.

Looks like Billy Lane, the Melbourne motorcycle builder that has been on a few Discovery Channel shows, caused an accident on A1A, killing a motorcyclist.

That's awful.

I was very close to buying a Harley from a friend of mine at a great price, and had an empty pallet fly into my car on the way there. Never looked at the bike the same way again.

You absolutly have no chance if things go bad no matter what kind of bike you're on.

"This is not Lane’s first road incident this year.

In June, he was arrested by the North Carolina Highway Patrol on charges of drunk driving. Police said Lane was driving the wrong way on a two-lane road without a helmet"

Lane looks to be one of those a-hole drivers that tailgate you and pass on double yellow lines. This time he killed a guy. Lets hope it's the last time.

Patience is a virtue & in this case could have saved a life. What a shame.

Yeah I saw this on the paper yesterday, I was surprized no one posted on this sooner.

It sounds like he is already at fault on this for passing on a Solid Double Line.

Poor guy on the moped didn't have a chance against that truck.

I am pretty sure it was the same guy from the inlet.

I rode my bike down to the scene. There was debris everywhere, I won't get into details but it was pretty gruesome. RIP.

sad situation for all involved.

I came upon that accident right after the cops arrived. I was on my way home, and the street was blocked off entirely. Cops told me it would be blocked for hours so I had to drive back up to 192 then down US1 and back up from Vero Beach.

Tonight I passed the spot and it was definitely double lines right there.

Horrible that had to happen. I've been tempted to pass a bluehair over the doublelines before, but I'll never forget this tragedy.. no way I'd ever do it now.

I feel terrible it was a guy from the inlet on the moped- I eat in there alot- but I dont recognize the name Jerry- can anyone describe what he looked like?

hey hey now before everyone starts bashing billy why would someone ride a moped at nine at night, and who knows the guy on the moped could have been right on the line and if billy just swerved over to take a peek to see if there was any oncoming trafic, since that area is right before the dashed line, he may have hit the guy then. Also, the guy on the moped lives on the ocean in that area(not jerry from inlet) and could have been going across a1a from the bikepath so his lights would not be visible since hes perpendicular to the traffic. Too many unknown facts to just assume its was Lane's fault

I would assume he didnt see the guy's light, if there was a working light..

but he's still going to be in a world of pain for having this happen while crossing a double line.

Sucks all around really.

What did I learn? Stay behind the bluehair and just take it- dont give in and pass

I bet billy walks.

For the rest of the working world, what is the potential penalty for a death like this in FL?

steve i was just trying to illustrate the point that their is too much information not known for you to just assume that "Lane looks to be one of those a-hole drivers that tailgate you and pass on double yellow lines. This time he killed a guy. Lets hope it's the last ti"me. That solid line is just a few feet from the dasged line and many drivers like to have an idea of whether or not they will be able to pass up ahead so they slide over a little to see if there is any oncoming traffic. Dont be lame man, everyone deserves a chance and you should not be so quick to judge just because of past incidences.

True, but it's not lookin good for Billy Lane. He might do 2 or 3 years for this...and I bet his bike prices go out the roof. People just need to slow down a bit while driving, to many thing can go wrong.

Real sad story.

He Cuban,
I see your point of not jumping to conclusions but...
Where the accident occured is about 1/3 a mile before the dashed passing lanes start.. no where close, not even in sight yet... he was 3 or 4 blocks N of publix when the accident happend. The dash lines don't start until the S side of Publix...

I have also been tempted to pass in this area often.. and have done it a few times as well, especially after being stuck behind someone crusing at 30/35.. but never at night on a holiday weekend... Definitely not dumb enough to drive like that after some drinks (not stating billy was impaired either, just making a point)

Gerry was a very cool person, he often worked the gate very early in the morn greeting dawn patrollers. He was very easy to deal with.. if you left your pass, he was cool about it. He was my favorite out of the employees down there. He will be missed.
