Summer heat is tough on fish in the Lagoon
This is the time of year when more frequent rains coupled with longer daylight hours can create an environment that is ripe for localized algal blooms. There have been several reports of fish kills over the past few weeks, mainly in the Banana River basin around the Mathers Bridge and canals of Satellite Beach. Those familiar with the Lagoon say the seasonal high water temperature coupled with low dissolved oxygen (DO) levels create conditions that can trigger fish kills. Warmer water holds less oxygen and rain events carry a fresh flow of nutrients off the surrounding lands feeding localized algae blooms. These blooms consume oxygen at night, leaving too little oxygen for the fish. If you encounter a fish kill, please report it to https://app.myfwc.com/FWRI/FishKillReport/Submit.aspx
On the brighter side, water clarity is quite good across large areas of the lagoon and seagrass regrowth is being found in many places. Nevertheless, these recent events just remind us of how quickly the pollutants entering the lagoon can trigger algal blooms in our warm, tropical waters.
Brevard County acquired a grant this year to use satellite images to map and track algae blooms in the lagoon. The Sentinel Viewer Tool for algae blooms is accessible online at: https://arcgis.appliedecologyinc.com/.../b6ddd7e5b16f478b...

just did some central Brevard River Fishing.

Water is Brown.

Yeah I just went fishing last week (kayak), put in at Kelly Park and fished a little passed KARS. Pretty dirty and wasn't sure what to except with the water level but I'm not going to be doing any "true" flats fishing for a while. It was a good 4-5' above normal. Shoreline was usually a foot or so deep, not anymore. Fish are going to be getting into places they haven't been able to before. Managed a nice size snook, dink red and lost a couple more snook and a trout.

Infrastructures cant handle the masses of people anymore, let alone a hurricane

And yet our state does all it can to bring in more people. But then again, the best way to make money in a 'taxes are the enemy state' is to add more people.

I was right.

With the building of A1A and all of the development plus beach renourishment we`ve stopped Mother nature from flushing out the lagoon like it had since the beginning, time to open it up in a few spots, just saying, and have been for decades,,,,
WAY passed time to flush the toilet we`ve createdisgust;

New cruise ship@ the port - which holds more than 7K passengers & 2,200 crew......_what will this have on the already strained infrastructures / river / ocean

The water is an interesting shade of orange right now. And it's in the cool of winter. This can't end well.

pumping raw sewage into the irl is legal.

desanctimonious blames the pollution on faulty septic tanks.

and that's where he is pouring tax payers money.
