Thought I'd chime in with my experiences with G&L and in particular the S-500.
I've had a few G&L guitars and still have the first one I got, a '96 S-500 with a bowling ball finish that I played the snot out of for several years.
They really are a great playing and sounding guitar. They have what i consider the best free float bridge ever. The pickups are more meaty then a traditional strat tone and the toggle switch will kick on all three pickups and give convincing humbucker tones. I was playing a lot of classic rock stuff then and this was a good guitar for that.

So, if you are looking for a reasonably priced strat guitar it might be worth your time to check out a G&L, they are the next gen Strat that Leo Fender himself designed and sold.
