The IRL never had anywhere near the number of sea cows it does now. They used to be further south but they have been induced to come up here by the warm water discharges form the power plants.

I am regularly fishing North IRL and Mosquito Lagoon. I believe the manatee populations have increased here also. they eat the grass and crap in the water. Don't forget what the indigenous man said: "taste like chicken" JB's legacy is not tied to the sea cow. ------------------------- So if you are a surfer I wish you the prosperity that allows you more time to pursue the salt water dream, and the true happiness that comes from warm water, clean waves and the companionship of your fellow surfers. If you are an internet troll just spewing bs then f off. |

I wonder what the grass was like before the clean water legislation in the early 70's. My granddad's brother live here in the early 60's and the water was nasty, according to him anyway.

Couple quick numbers here. At the inception of the Endangered Species Act (1973), about 1000 manatee existed in FL. With subsequent protection, population expanded to about 6000. Carrying capacity models show a range of 2000 to 10,000 individuals. At 6000, mid range, manatee were unlikely to be "overpopulated". Human driven eutrophication of the IRL caused loss of 80% grass beginning about 2010/11 with the superbloom. Currently, manatee population in IRL is in sharp decline via starvation. In 2021, statewide, about 1000 manatee deaths, twice normal, with starvation in IRL as the primary driver. Sorry guys, it's us. I lived here starting in 1959 and fished, swam and sailed in the Indian River and the water was not nasty.
