Worse is the media giving them so much air time "people are saying". Yeah, people say a lot of stupid speculative shit and the media just spreads it for clicks rather than investigating things and reporting facts. But investigation costs money and there is profit in bullshit so the corporate media that has been stripped to the bone just blathers on.

The pool deck collapsed first, so that likely set off the rest of the collapse. But it's extremely rare for buildings, even ones in bad shape, to collapse. It does happen--part of a terminal at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport fell apart a few years ago. Poor engineering. The possibility of poor ground under the building and possibly inadequate piles needs to be checked. Rotting, wet parking garage under the building is suspect, of course. Washington Post's reporting is more speculative than the NY Times; Miami Herald seems to be doing a good job, not bad for a newspaper with few resources. I think the investigation into the collapse will be long and probably frustrating.
