Getting killed in the surf - we rode anything we could find - styrofoam belly boards (not as good as the longer ones, but they lasted longer), rafts of any sort (those long pool ones with the pillows folded around me each time), and patched up truck tire tubes from PAFB's dump (beware of those long inflation stems! and they didn't surf, they just went over the falls). Anybody remember Tinker by the Sea in south CCB? My parents and their friends (and all of us kids) met there every Sat and Sun (after church). We would cook breakfast, lunch and dinner most weekends, then we kids were sent home to the babysitter and the parents would set up a bonfire and party until midnight. One of my friends was named Tinker because that was where he was conceived. (Not in the motel, either.) The early 60s were great times!

RE : Tinker by the sea : https://storage.googleapis.com/hippostcard/p/36c718a1463f6334710faa8b380798dc.jpg ( You can even see sizeable white water in the distance , pretty cool .... ) And if you zoom in , there appears to be a Natividad scene on the lawn , and to the far left of the image is a fully decorated Christmas tree along the outer building------ so evidently December , but of what year ?

I surfed the wave featured in that video. It's called Guillotines in the town of Ulladulla. As you can see in the video it breaks very close to "shore". The shore is rock shelf. You literally park your car on the smooth rock shelf that is a little higher elevation...4 or 5 feet.
The takeoff/lineup is probably 15 yards from shore. You just wait for a lull jump in and paddle very little and you are ready to roll. The wave wraps around the bend of the shelf/parking lot. It's a super cool little setup. On a good day you can get barreled off your nut on that wave. I was with Kech and Kuhn when I surfed it. There is another break right next to it called Bawley Point which has a similar setup. Here is a better day: https://youtu.be/ThRbaI4pGIs?si=A4sUeFugEeWVW4D3 than the video above . I got a couple backside tubes there but actually bailed on a couple of them thinking I was getting to close to the rocks, I would have made it if I'd just kept going. I ended up breaking my board there.

My name is George Drazich. Yeah it was when both Kuhn and Kech were on tour. I think it would have been about February 1986. I tagged along with them on tour during the Australian leg and we surfed between comps anywhere from Gold Coast to Bells.

Wow, Joe, thanks soooooo much for that photo. It brought back a ton of memories. And, once again, I cannot thank you enough for the surf and music posters a few years ago. They are still framed and still flashing memories for me. I have pm'd you regarding my address. Stop in next time you are down this way.

1986 ? ,Boy I was off by several years! Brother George , : Tommy Black here , Aka " Joe Strummer " ( We go way back to the " Apollo Building Era " ) As does Matt Belinia ( Aka " Truth " , the previous post above yours )-----so you surfed it on your backhand , no wonder you snapped your board .... that would have been a Dough Wright , if I am not mistaken ? No backup ?

hey Tom hows it. I think I ended up buying a board off of CK...a Gordon & Smith that I later used up on the Gold Coast. I stayed with Mark Abrel right above Burliegh Heads for a month or so and surfed every day. Mark was the guy who looked like Shaun Thomson that lived in CB for a while, he probably surfed at Apollo building "back in the day"
