It turns out the plants are amazingly tough about being transplanted.  I was visiting a garden with huge conservatiories this weekend.  One of the buildings was completely refurbished a while back.  The huge old bougainvilleas climbing the columns were somehow taken down, moved to temporary quarters, and put back into place afterward.  They all survived.
