My girlfriend is doing research for me on date when Congress is suppose to vote.  I believe sometime this week, but not for certain.

All I know is that CONGRESS has DECLINED a bunch of the Presidents proposal on other issues.  If enough people sign the letter .. it could save the projects & thousands of jobs.  Last stats I read which pertain to when Space Shuttle retired was approx 24,000 jobs.

Retiring the space shuttles PLUS canceling Constellation ... can't even image how high the loss of jobs will be throughout the country.  Also keep in mind the surrounding businesses near all th NASA locations (10-14) that will also suffer; this will be bad.

KEEP HOPE ALIVE & SIGN THE LETTER to SAVE SPACE EXPLORATION!!!!   Don't know about you, but the thought of Americans depending on Russia or Red China to do any future launches doesn't sit well w/ me.

How does Scott Brown the recently elected senator from Massachusetts, who ran a campaign to slash government spending and lower taxes, help the space program?

I too want the work to stay here, but didn't a study done a few years ago conclude that the Constellation project would only save about 400 jobs?

Oh no .. WAY MORE JOB LOST then that!  There are over 400 people in the company that my dad works for that will be affected.  The 400 job lost count I saw was stated in 2008 in Baltimore location ONLY.

There are 2,500 people working at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville that will be affected just for the moon project (announced Feb 3rd).  I don't know exact stats for KSC, but I heard several thousand employees.

Keep in mind that for every 1 job loss ... approx 3-5 other business will be affected by unemployment.   NASA previously projected that as many as 6,400 Kennedy Space Center contractor workers might lose their jobs as a result of the retirement of the Space Shuttle ONLY.  That's just CONTRACTORS!

Last stats I saw for when space shuttle retires was approx 24,000+ job losses (think that was for all NASA locations); people have been slowly transitioning to Constellation/Ares project.  CONSTELLATION is a combination of several NASA projects ... approx 12-15 states are involved.   Now multiply 24,000 x 3 or 5 for surrounding businesses ... that's a lot of people/families involved!

Since KSC is the main NASA location to "LAUNCH", we're going to be affected the most w/ this cancellation if Congress approves of Obama's proposal.

This thread should be moved to NSR, where the sh!t flies freely.
I'd hate to see the surfing forum desecrated by political bigotry.

Besides, it'll get even more attention.
I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread started on it yet.

Here's some wiki about constellation's history and future.

More people read the 'SURFING' categories than NSR .. that's why I created it here.  This decision affects my family & thousands in our area ...

NASA cancels KSC contract leading to charge “Obama broke law” ~ Orlando Sentinel (2/13/10)

NASA on Friday cancelled its solicitation for the next generation ground services contract for Kennedy Space Center, leading to accusations that President Barack Obama broke the law.

http://www.parabolicarc.com/2010/02/13/congressman-cries-foul-nasa-cancels-constellationrelated-contract-solicitation/

"We at NASA have discovered water on the Moon. Now water consists of hydrogen and oxygen. So, it is paramount to return to the Moon and secure mineral rights for the United States to obtain this water. By doing so, we can create the liquid oxygen and hydrogen to serve as a ‘gas station” on the Moon. Furthermore, the oxygen from the water will supply air to breathe for our Moon Station personnel. The hydrogen will be a source of energy to keep our base self sufficient. Given the existence of water on the Moon, we can employ hydroponics to grow food. The Moon Base will be a stepping stone to reach Mars and other bodies of the solar system from.

So hold off on your Constellation Cancellation party. Intelligent and knowledgeable people may yet prevail in repulsing President Obama’s misguided and foolish attempt to cancel the Constellation program."

Anyone who believes we must Save Our Space Exploration is not only good for KSC, but the entire country has an opportunity to be counted. Don’t give up the fight.  Please Pass the word around and see you there!!!

WHY SUPPORT SPACE EXPLORATION & WHY GO TO THE MOON or MARS?

Space requirements drove solar power, recycling methodologies & waste management systems, remote medical operating systems (used all the time), nonflammable materials, pressure vessels, fuel cells, etc.  We found out more about our planet by bringing soil home from the MOON than we ever would have found out otherwise. We’ve learned more about physiology, more about acceleration & low gravity on people.

Manned spaceflight inspired us to do so much more in space than we ever would have, including communication for all those fun every day devices that people depend on & think come from who knows where.  An articled on Feb 10, 2010 stated that they found liquid water on Saturn's moon. Andrew Coates of Mullard Space Science Lab in a statement. "And where there's water, carbon and energy, some of the major ingredients for LIFE are present."

Mars has readily available resources, including the most important: WATER, in relatively abundant amounts, compared to the Moon. Mars also has a roughly 24-hour day night cycle which is crucial for plant development.  We want to go there to see if we can find evidence of LIFE & if we don’t find it, we want to establish new life on Mars—our own to avoid a planetary crisis like an asteroid impact that could wipe us out.

EDITED:  note sure why the quote went to top, but here's another try ....

Below is copy of a quote from a manager @ KSC

What???  No cutbacks???  This will only benefits Indonesia where all the new space jobs will be, but not here where the current projections are that KSC/Brevard country job losses will amount to about 35,000 people! That is more than the post Apollo numbers. The current estimated job cutbacks that includes the end of Shuttle and the cancellation of Concellation numbers is over 9,000 Kennedy Space Center (KSC) employees, 13,000+ at Johnson Space Center (JSC), 15,000+ at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) , 12,000+ at Utah, and slightly less amount at Stennis.  I don't have the mumbers for the other NASA centers at Glenn in Ohio, Goddard in Maryland, Langley in Virginia, etc.

The total impact is far greater as chamber of commerce estimates for every job lost at a space center, there are 3 jobs off center that are affected/supported.  This will cause families to move out to seek employment elsewhere, causing student population to drop drastically.  That, in turn, will cause schools to close down and more teacher layoffs.  Real Estate market and tourism to drop, resturants, clothing stores, surf shops, all other retail businesses to close.

In other words, everyone will suffer!!!  Those who aren't in the space business and don't think this affects them will be hit with a rudely awakening when they find themselves suddenly without a job due to all the downsizing that will be forced upon their employers due to the lost/drastic reduction of the space program.
