any buddy know of where david is? last time i saw or heard of him was in aguadilla in 95'. use to live across the street from me at 14th when i was a grom in the mid 70's, and his surfing and shapes were so bizarre back then, but now i realize, so way ahead of his time, and in many ways, genius!

Hmmmm time for one of my DCB stories....It was around 74 or so...I was working at Alma's and going to 13th grade at BCC. Mostly surfing around town. So I'd run into the local heavies every once in a while. So at the urging of several of my friends I entered the Easter contest at the pier. Got to the second round somehow. The waves were pretty big SE wind chop. I was from Miami so I had quite a lot of experience with this type of wave. So I'm picking up the jersey and there he is DCB. In my heat. ( with 3 others) He gives me the typical shiteating grin and off we go at the horn. I catch quite a few good ones . So the horn sounds we paddle in and DCB is paddling next to me mumbling fbombs and stuff. We get up on the beach and he says to me: " They are going to have to run this fing heat again, i didn't get any waves." I'm like ...ahhhh , well, ok with me. I really didn't give a crap about the contest I just wanted to surf. So they post the results...yep DCB advances. I think he got to the semi final. I saw him a few weeks latter . He was cordial to me after that. I did admire his style. He had a different plan than most.

I dunno either Col, that was about the last I heard about him too, around '95. I dunno if you remember but DCB was constantly making all these weird boards with T Smith as his co-conspirator. I remember him shaping this longer (7' or so) board, very thin and wide, it had like a bat tail on it, shaping with nothing but a sur-form and sandpaper. He finished the shape about 9 in the morning, had it glassed with single layer 4 oz cloth by 10 and was out riding it by 1 in the afternoon. Hadn't even knocked all the sharp edges off the glass job! He used to ride longer and thinner boards that he made alll the time and just ripped on them. I tried them but they just weren't corky enough for me as I out weighed DCB by about 25 lbs. They were so damn thin, I don't think they were even 2 inches thick. I'm trying to remember which California or Hawaii surf big shot saw his boards and told him "Just go throw all those things in a fire." He was freakin' LIVID at the guy. But we all know now who was right as longer boards became lighter and offered better performance for the average surf dog a few years later.

Wasn't he also making some of his shortboards with concave deck then also? Seems I remember that. He was also making "progressive" longboards in the 70's ...... thin, tons of rocker, multi wings. WAY WAY out there for the time and he ripped on them.

About 10 year ago I had to (stress had to) go into Aqua East in Jax Bch (the Ron Jon of Jax) and they had a couple of new Gary Propper longboards for sale. I looked them over and thought .... those look like old DCB shapes. I look at the dims and shaper sig ..... yep, DCB

saw him paddle out across the street from my house, summer of 77', mid july, but good summer for swell; 3' oil slick glass and rip. coming up the boardwalk where im sitting, he sets it down on da rail of the BW 2 use the shower, and it was a boomerang. i said something stupid about it im sure, but ill never 4get what he said 2 me, shiteating half grin and all, " i call it the Banana", and he walked back 2 regis jupinkos apartment! i thought, and my dad said he was nutz, but now i realize, it had 9" of nose rocker, 5 or more inches of tail rocker, no flat, and a concave deck, and he was fucking ripping! i luv how history recycles itself! thnx LBL for the rekindling!

surfed Boca Barranca with him 4 or 5 years ago when he was in Costa (I think)buying some prop from Kuhn
but surfed a lot with him back in the day when he was the skinny lil long white haired ripper ... insane charger, making thin boards and surfing them the same day
he did well in PR ... friend of mine there bought his used Ford 150 that I drove some this past winter. DCB used it to launch his fishing boat.
Kuhn prob knows whats up with him.
