"WASHINGTON - President Obama today announced 209 grants of commutation, bringing the total number in his eight years in office to 1,385. The recipients include American Civil Liberties Union client Chelsea Manning. Of the 209 commutations, 109 were granted to people serving life without parole.
Robert Booker had no criminal history when he was sentenced to life without parole for a nonviolent drug offense. The ACLU featured Booker in "A Living Death: Life Without Parole for Nonviolent Offenses." "I was sentenced to death, not life, if you ask me," Booker said in his 2013 interview for the report. "You're just waiting until that day you die." Booker has been in federal prison since 1995. His four children have grown up without him, and he has never met his grandchildren. "Today President Obama gave hope to 209 prisoners serving sentences that are far too long for their offenses," said Jennifer Turner, author of "A Living Death" and principal human rights researcher for the ACLU. "The president has made it possible for them to rebuild lives that have been devastated by the failed war on drugs." I think Manning probably meant well, but isnt all that mentally stable to begin with. Perhaps she was negatively influenced by Assange, which wouldnt be the first time that was thought to have happened. He is turning out to be quite the douche.
At this point, the way they were keeping Manning was getting to be a form of torture. Solitary confinement for the rest of your life? That will push a person over the edge, as evidenced by her suicide attempts. Obama is obviously aware of this, as he knows this will be unpopular- but he feels its what he must do. or perhaps it had more to do with this: "On Twitter last week, Assange's anti-secrecy site WikiLeaks posted, "If Obama grants Manning clemency Assange will agree to US extradition despite clear unconstitutionality of DoJ case." Snowden, on the other hand is very intelligent, knew exactly what he was doing and did it for some admirable reasons (if you believe what he says) It took balls of steel- something I doubt I would be able to man up and do.. I give him credit for that, and truthfully, the light needed to be put on the NSA ------------------------- Pro Puppy-Killer Party 2024 |

"Let me get this straight. Chelsea Manning saw a clip of the US soldiers mockingly murdering people and engaging in a clear violation of the Geneva convention by killing rescuers after the atrocious attacks, among other war crimes committed by the military. As it would be an obligation to anyone with a sense of justice and humanity, she went ahead and turned the materials to WikiLeaks so that the facts become a part of a healthy democratic discourse. She has done an honorable work as a public servant as well as an exemplary human being. As a result, she has been subjected to a solitary confinement--defined as a form of torture according to international laws--for seven years. She has attempted suicide twice while being incarcerated. Meanwhile, President Obama went on to personally oversee drone assassinations of over 4000 people, which turned out to be mostly innocent civilians. Reading the description of the President commuting her sentence in the New York Times was as despicable, deceptive and subservient to the murderous State as the act of the President who had made an incriminating statement against Chelsea Manning even before her trial. How could the paper make it sound like she committed a crime? How could it get away with not discussing the grave nature of the war crimes committed by the state when discussing her incarceration? With a fake news propaganda war machine like the NYT and other like it, we will need many more people like Chelsea Manning. What she's done will remain in history as an exceptional act of courage, self-sacrifice, love and peace. Thank you Chelsea Manning." ------------------------- |

If I understand correctly, the Manning person just released footage of our soldiers killing civilians, which seems more like an act of journalism than espionage. Sure, he was distinctly told not to do so, but he's done his time.
On the other hand, the Snowden guy intentionally distributed what he knew about our intel gathering methodology and capabilities, our partners, etc etc, making terrorists, home-grown and abroad, better able to circumvent detection.
I don't think they're similar enough cases for comparison.

Why did Snowden go to China and Russia? Maybe something to do with extradition policies? If I understand correctly, the Manning person just released footage of our soldiers killing civilians, which seems more like an act of journalism than espionage. A guy on CNN last night said Manning release 750,000 files; not pages, but 750,000 full documents. Wikipedia mentions that Manning was charged with 22 counts, and has a breakdown of what was released and how, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_Manning |

Most military personnel I know are critical of the pardon, Military.com reported over 800 negative comments on their article. Exactly why we should be more careful before allowing our government to invent justifications for war and imperialism.
It also serves to educate why so many vets return with ptsd, and/or defect and start shooting up random people here at home. It is hell, especially when the killing is unjustified in the minds of the soldiers sent to pull the trigger. |

"Senior officials told CNN that Obama decided to act because Manning had expressed remorse and responsibility for her actions, and she had already served six years of a long sentence.
Obama may also have been motivated by humanitarian considerations, given that Manning is a transgender woman facing decades in an all-male prison and has attempted suicide several times. He may also have reasoned that with President-elect Donald Trump about to take office, the chances of Manning winning release for years to come were slim. The President also came under intense pressure from LGBT groups that have been stalwart supporters throughout his political career to show eleventh hour compassion towards Manning. A source with knowledge of the White House's thinking told CNN's Gloria Borger that Obama's decision took into account the fact that Manning -- unlike fugitive leaker Edward Snowden -- had pleaded guilty in a court of law to her offenses." ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill Edited: 01/18/2017 at 07:40 AM by WG |

Manning and Snowden are American citizens, Assange is not.
Manning and Snowden were the thieves, and the source of the leaks; Assange was only a conduit for Manning's and Putin's. Shouldn't you be at least as pissed at Manning for stealing and disseminating classified information as you are at Russia and Assange for stealing and revealing DNC foibles? As far as the transgender aspects are concerned, it seems the government could have found an appropriate federal prison facility. As noted in the earlier post citing Wikipedia, Manning said she would rather be executed or spend life in prison than have her male pictures posted on the internet. That could have been arranged too. As far as the transgender aspects are concerned, it seems the government could have found an appropriate federal prison facility. There was some discussion of that 2 years ago, not sure why it didn't happen. But that it didn't, made the 6 years she did serve for her crime a worse punishment. I think the President did the right thing offering her clemency. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/H...ison/story?id=23713399 edit- Reading that though again it seems that her attorney opposed that move, perhaps hoping for something like this instead. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill Edited: 01/19/2017 at 10:54 AM by WG |

But that it didn't, made the 6 years she did serve for her crime a worse punishment. I'll agree it was probably hellish by way of the army not following standard civilian psychological treatment guidelines. As your ABC link pointed out, "In federal prisons, guidelines for housing of transgender inmates in sex-segregated facilities are regulated by the Prison Rape Elimination Law." I guess that law doesn't apply to the military. Still having some trouble with that. Obama may have had some forward-looking concern about Trump's handling of Manning in the future, but I think he had executive options that could have alleviated most of those concerns. Isn't the intelligence community alleging that Russia also has compromising info on Trump and the RNC, chose to burn Hillary first so they can blackmail Trump later, with the end goal being complete delegitimization of US gov and a divided nation, or for access to favored treatment?
If true, that's a little more serious than just hacking the DNC. But who knows if it is true, and if it is true it will be widely disregarded, because the disinformation campaigning, both foreign and domestic has severely undermined confidence in the media and the government. |
