50th is in September and coming quick so I need to figure out where to go. Safe place with fun surf for me and the GF. Costa is at top of list right now. I went to Tamarindo about 10 years ago and caught only small surf, so considering another location central or south. Nica and Mexico are out. I go to PR all the time and will again this winter. Looking like Costa will be it as airfare to San Jose is pretty reasonable right now.
If guys could go somewhere in late September where would you go?

hard to beat Costa again for many reasons.

Hawaii is def out with airfare and flight time. I'm lucky enough to have been there twice already although only got to surf one of those trips. I've never been to Hermosa area and kinda have a bad image in my head from what I've read over the years but could pleasantly surprised once there. A big swell there would certainly humble me as well as I see the place can be pretty heavy at times. I'm a goofy foot and a left point break would be a dream come true as would be catching Pavones on a good swell, but being with the GF instead of a group of wave hungry surfers could make the long trip getting there a nightmare and I believe that place is pretty fickle as well? IDK, I need to figure it out soon. Thanks

Send me a PM and I can help plan your Costa Rica trip - hotel, car rental, tours, and surfboard rentals if needed. September can be hit or miss in the northern part of the country, but in the southern Pacific there are consistent spots. You also can wait to make reservations until a week before your trip so you will have a better idea of what the swell is going to do.

you could do the whole Texas Surf Safari. New Park opened in Wack. From the few video clips I have watched looks kind of fun. Do the Parks then book a boat to surf the Tanker wakes in the Houston Channel. Yes it is a real thing. Sand bares form in the channel Big manga Trankers come by and you get some nice looking waves. A fast boat passes the Tanker gets you to another sand bar and you hop your way from wave to wave. 

Nosara a "hidden" gem ?!?!?!?!?

lol ... seriously. It was unknown in the 80's and early 90's,....... but now? Hardly. There are franchise real estate agency's, restaurants you need a reservation for, a place to rent a loud, obnoxious, dust cloud creating f-ing 4 wheeler!! and petty crime is off the richter scale these days.

Sadly, Nosara has been sucked into the same downward crap spiral that killed Hermosa and Tamarindo. Everybody that I knew that owned land / lived there has sold and moved the hell out. Makes me sad.

i was talking about the hidden gem breaks of Nosara area. Wasnt talking about it being a hidden gem itself, yes it is far from that.
But also it is not a Tamarindo, not even close.

The last few years have been odd down there weatherwise.  I just returned from what I considered a normal week in early May.  As far as September, I've been through worse wet stretches in July, and even one year in early December.  I still keep going back though.  Great choice for your birthday.  hope you catch waves and fish.

Lunchmeat - I sent a reply so I know more about what kind of waves you want. Backyard has nice rooms and local contests on the weekend that bring in tourists (local and foreign) to their bar/restaurant. I've stayed there and at the bungalows near the tree, about 1/4 mile south near 'The Tree' surf break. Those are individually owned and since it's the low season I know some owners who have deep discounts.

I just was surfing there today. There was a short window for good waves, ones that didn't close out or break to close to the beach - it was chest to overhead and slightly onshore at 7 a.m. and then around 10 it started raining and the winds turned offshore as it went to high tide.

Why are you ruling out Mexico? If it is concern about crime. Most of the crime is not in the in or around the tourist and surf locations. September and October are usually very good for surf in Mexico.

I used to go to Playa Guiones/ Nosara all the time but after my last trip in January I'm not going back. It has gotten so crowded and over developed. one afternoon sesh I counted >250 surfers and >150 people on the beach, 99.9% gringos. Luckily I have found a place that is a dream come true in CR, Maybe September wont be so crowded in Nosara, but know that large swells can come in that time of the year
