surfed that rivermouth just last month during that big swell.
paddling north across it to chase the rights on the Playa Grande side was kinda spooky for me during the outgoing tide... kept watching for what was scaring the fish coming out of the estuary

Video.  The victim apparently got at least partway to shore under his own power.

Of course people can sometimes do extraordinary things when in shock.  Long ago, a colleague was bitten on the shoulder by an alligator on the Oklawaha River.  He got his boat back to the ramp, put the boat on the trailer, and drove back to the office in Gainesville, where he was immediately hustled to the ER.

He moved to Wyoming.

Looks like it took his right foot. Messed up. I knew there were crocs down there, but this was the first time I've heard of an attack.

At the last Greg Noll  Jaco event only days before Andrew wiped out S. Florida, Balsa Bill and I were driving down each dirt road to see what may lay at it's end.

We turned towards a sign that said Las Peritas and had to cross the estuary several times before coming to the beach. At the last bridge was a F'ing dinosaur laying on the river bank, 3 feet wide at the back and 2 feet thick and at least10-12 feet long, it was a dinosaur

Our youngest now lives in Playa Grande and teaches school nearby.
He and his girlfriend had one come after them in the skiff locals were using to taxi them across the rivermouth couple months ago.
We spoke to him this afternoon about this attack. Lotsa surfing and surf schools at the Tamarindo rivermouth. No more paddling across now for him.

That estuary is full of crocs

BTW... I came face-to-face with a really big one back in 1991 wading across the lil rivermouth after surfing the lefts at Playa Tivives (just south of Boca Barranca). Tivives link

BLat,

A "lot" of times people do have "health" coverage, BUT, , , , , , they do not purchase the "evacuation option" and then are otherwise stuck in-place, "health" insurance or not. Just a simple "medical evacuation" could cost $20,000 PLUS.

Evacuation coverage seems reasonably cheap, but I don't know the market, so can't make suggestions.  United Airlines markets coverage by Emergency Assistance Plus.  Of course United sometimes seems as though it would be better off just to shut down and sell its assets.

Horrific! I've surfed Tamarindo river mouth dozens of times (not lately), also Tivives, but only once. My friend and I just stumbled on it in the early '80's. Neat shorter point break set up in front of a cliff with these caves carved into it from repeated big swells I guess. As Bob says, at low tide you can wade across that river mouth, driftwood all over the place. After a 2 hour sesh the tide came up and we had to paddle back across, dodging big driftwood logs coming out of the river. Back at the hotel the manager asked us where we'd gone surfing, after telling him he said to never go there again! Just a few days before a croc had taken a local fishermen at that same rivermouth! Since then I've heard of a few more attacks at the same spot over the years. I've also heard that the crocs have been leaving the rivers and hanging at the beaches more and more.

Hey, Tingo

Yep... we use to always surf that spot on the way back to Jaco after a morning at Boca Barranca or Caldera.

Often wondered why the local farmers would gather up on the plateau above the caves overlooking that left and watch us surf. Now I know it wasn't the surfing they were watching.
Eventually, my old friend, Cuondo at Boca warned me to stay away from there because of the crocs.

Horrible, but bound to happen. Yes sir Secondino always warned us about crocs at Boca Barranca.

Went to Boca Damas one time by boat. Had the boards, good , clean swell. I would not get out of the boat. Crocs in the lineup.

I never went across the river to Grande.

Back in the day, I've crossed that river myself to surf Playa Grande.  This is just such a tragedy.  My prayers and thoughts go out to Mr. Becker for the best possible outcome.

Hi, Dalton
If you guys surf the high tide push at Playa Grande's main peak, look for our youngest, Jeremy, who now lives there. Girlfriend Mallory works afternoons at SkipJackInn restaurant ... good eats! Also check out the Taco stand at Grande break by Las Tortugas hotel. -BobF

Looks like the croc did a death roll with his foot a twisted.

I've been all over CR. But never further north than the Mal Pais area. Figgered it that would be like coming to the US for a surf trip and going to Va Beach. Everywhere has crocs. Driving S from Jaco to Dominical were signs under the small "bridges" saying no banarse, with a silhouettem of a croc. theres a place called Guacalillio between Jaco and Puntarenas near Boca Barranca. It's at a river mouth and one jumps of a cliff to get out. A croc came out of a dry river and came out to get fish from nets.
I asked a local if he saw it. He said yeah, he lives here.

Balsa Bill and I scoped out Isla Damas, we were warned NOT to paddle that far out, especially on an outgoing tide because of the Crocs

I've crossed that river mouth a few times and also at Boca. Boca is worst cause the water is muddy. Knew a guy that got his calf muscle messed up at Boca. He was the the guy that took me there for my first time. Poor Dude, his surfing days appear to be over.

I've been surfing Tamarindo since 1997 and know that estuary has a few big crocs, but I've never seen one in the lineup. The rivermouth has shifted farther south, up towards the more populated part of the beach so there's a bigger chance someone is going to be bit. If you are traveling that way, just be vigilant (and maybe surf in front of the Diria instead).

I was under the impression this happened more in the river trying to cross from the Tamarindo side to the Playa Grande side, not out in the line up itself.

I crossed that at knee-deep; moderate paranoia.. South of Hermosa, I never surfed the Tulin rivermouth after hearing about crocs in that lineup.

Added to the list of why to avoid Tamarindo the last 15+ years, unless in the area and need to hit a major grocery store.

First and only time I've seen one of these dinosaurs in the lineup was at Ollie's on one of our trips last year... massive spikes on his tail, but fortunately not hungry that day since nobody stopped surfing even after we knew he was hanging out.

You're right. I saw the original pics on Stab a few days ago. Then yesterday they updated that new video. My bad. I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong- so sorry for the gaff. I surfed guacallillio. We called it crocky point. The crocs we saw were not in the lineup and some locals were surfing with us which was why we paddled out but it did feel like a dangerous needless addition to a surf spot.

For me... after approx 30 surf trips to Costa, beginning 1986... and having surfed some notorious croc zones... consider myself fortunate to have not been attacked, and to have only had one stare down with a monster coming our from that jungle covered rivermouth at Tivives whle I was crossing after a fun sesh in front of the caves.

Prob just surf the better beach breaks there from now on.

Prob just surf the better beach breaks there from now on.

... just saying

I camped at Tivives. Sweet break. I was always more concerned with Fer du Lances than crocs.

I caught it good, but sooo dirty and sketchy. My buddy and I were the only two out and it was wrapping around the point perfectly. You couldn't see your hand in the water it was so dirty.
