What type of Leukemia specifically? If he does not want to share that is okay, but there are huge differences in prognosis and treatment for the different types.

Godspeed to his family

My childhood friend died from leukemia. Very sad. All the prayers I can manage are yours.

Childhood leukemias, at least some of them, have become highly treatable.

To judge from the case of another family, treatment can take a while.  That family's fortunate to be using a hospital that's kid friendly and family friendly.

Speak for yourself. Great medical care and a treatment plan founded on solid science is what will heal this child. So this is what I wish them the best of luck in finding.

Good luck and I will be thinking of this child giving my best wishes.

I learned of this thread through a friend/doctor/surfer in our small local community and we are also very appreciative to my surfing buddy Paul (equipeola) who probably misses me taking all the waves in the backyard for posting it.    So many of you have contacted us offline too.

In this time of extreme emotions for our family during this next challenge, it’s brought solace to know that powerful positive energy in so many forms is being directed toward our son from the 2ndlight community.

It’s like we know we’re about to endure a heavy multi-wave hold down and have just been hit by the first wave in the set, but we all took a full deep breath before we went under together and we are focused on staying relaxed and doing what is necessary to reach the surface and paddle back out to the point again.

We also know we’re not alone in the water and that means so much more than I can put into my own words...

CLICK ME

I’ve come to realize 2ndlight is more than just a forum, it’s a community of caring people who surf and I’m fortunate to be a part of it with close friends, neighbors, and so many others… 2ndlight was our source for identifying “local surfers in need” to sponsor for our CERTON golf tournaments, including Eddie Guilbeau and Matt Bellina, who are both reaping the benefits of good vibes and 2ndlight community support.  We’ve been very fortunate in our lives and have grown much stronger through adversity.

I’ll provide an update for those interested and I would also like to offer our family’s help to anyone that may need it in the future… this can come in many forms, even if it’s just sharing information related to our experience as it continues to develop.  Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital and the team of doctors in Rydyr’s corner have also been invaluable.  I’m very pragmatic in how I handle situations and our 10 year old boy is very mature making it easy for me to communicate with him on an adult level about all aspects of what is happening to him.  Most of the doctors have found this to be a breath of fresh air.  Rydyr even agreed to donate additional bone marrow samples to cancer research to help the science behind treatment and a potential cures for leukemia and that made me a very proud Dad. I've also shed a ton of tears.

What we know now:

The diagnosis is “pre-B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia” or “pre-B cell ALL”.  It is the most common in children and fortunately the most likely to be cured.

Treatment:

INTENSE chemotherapy for the first 28 days, which involves 4 different drugs, 3 of which are administered via IV port to be installed in his next procedure along with a spinal tap and 1 of which is taken orally.

Prognosis:

97% probability of “remission” after 28 days, where “remission” means the levels of lymphoblasts in his blood are less than 0.01%.  Regardless of whether the treatment is successful, meaning he achieves “remission”, the chemotherapy continues for several 57 day blocks with 1 week recovery periods in between to completely eradicate the cancerous cells.

Rydyr is doing great, his spirits are high, he's a stubborn boy who loves life and is ready to fight, and the doctors are optimistic, thank you for all your strength and encouragement… keep it flowing it does make a difference and we’ll be back out in the lineup soon.

We're home now and Rydyr is handling all the poison injections pretty well so far, but it feels like we're in limbo with no control of the outcome just waiting to see how he responds to this first month of intense treatment.

We're very appreciative of what we have as a family and we keep reminding each other, "ONE DAY AT A TIME" while focusing on some of the things we can control, like nutrition, rest, creature comforts, etc.  The short sessions of good surf while the family takes naps has helped clear my head too.

On a positive note, we were just put in contact with another local family in Melbourne whose 10 year old son just successfully completed his 3+ years of ALL chemo (same diagnosis as Rydyr).  We're joining their "team" for a HEAD SHAVING event at Viera on March 12, where Rydyr will be an "Honored Child".

I'll post details for anyone interested in participating with us or donating to a legitimate foundation that is dedicated to funding the most promising research to find cures for children's cancer (St. Baldrick's).

Keep grinding young lad,  My wife has been recieving Chemo since November for lymphoma.  The body will change and change drastically.  The sickness is unreal and it tends to get worse as time goes on, the hair does fall out and it becomes hard to eat as everything tastes like metal.  But rest assured, the psoitive support of those around him will do more than any medicine can, and victory will be upon you.  My prayers are with you all as we share in your battle.

What kind of "god" gives children leukemia anyway? Sounds like a prick to me.
I wont be praying to any "god", but I'm sure science and technology will heal your child.
I wish your little man the best.

Thoughts and prayers with you and your family!

As a father of 3 I can't imagine what you are going through, but know that all of this positive karma and energy will heal your child quickly ....

3 good resources I would want to know about: the China study (book); anti-cancer (book) the MD author had brain cancer and has been cancer free many years now; and forbidden cures ( search YouTube )

Alkalinity and laughter kill cancer cells!

Certon,
Your stoke and energy alone will carry your son to recovery.
The closest thing I have to your situation is my brother's son in 1991 who was hammered by an unknown virus that paralyzed him for 2 years.
That boy just graduated from UF with 3 engineering degrees.
God speed to your son and thankful you and your wife have the energy to overcome!

Not sure about those that say "it will all work out".  I belive in prayer and the God's power in all situations.  I've been there with both of my children.  God is in control.  I pray for God's will to be done in you and your family's life, and to give you peace through it all.

Rydyr began his 3.5 year chemo battle today and it was ROUGH, but I told him he had a thread with over 1300 views and almost 40 replies from people who share a love for surfing and the ocean offering their support on 2ndlight... He started cracking up laughing and said, "WHAAAT?!"

Caught off guard, we couldn't help but join him in a rare moment of pure exhaltation

At this moment, I'm very grateful to be able to feel those sounds and hear those emotions, so THANK YOU

Does he have a port yet?

And, get ready for some dietary changes. He'll need to keep his weight up, and it's hard, given that with the chemo, NOTHING normal tastes good, and there is always the potential for nausea. My favorite, that seemingly, actually, had a "pleasing" taste was canned green beens with canned pizza sauce. Ya, I know, , , , but at such times, weight loss is NOT acceptable.

Yes, he got his port.  Then he got a spinal tap.  Then he got his first chemo.

Then he ate a cup of pears.  Then he puked them up on my hand.  Then no appetite the rest of the day.

The alternative was less than 3 months to live with every day worse than the last.  It's going to be a tough battle even if all goes well, but I know it could always be worse and the prognosis for cure is actually good.

In to win.  Speaking of which Howard, which cancer(s) have you survived my friend?

While I have not (yet) met you, I just wanted you to know that you, Rydyr, and your entire family are in my thoughts and continual prayers in these very trying times.  As a father of 3 boys myself, I can only imagine how difficult this experience must be for you and the rest of your family.  Specifically, I'm praying for the complete healing of Rydyr, and that God grant you all, and especially Rydyr, peace, courage, faith, and stamina throughout his treatment.

Melanoma on my right forearm in 2010. And then, in the summer of 2012 it got real scary, while my wife was coming out of a month long coma after brain surgery, , , , I got a Big Lump under my right arm. Crap, but I did not want to have to worry about it, given the love and support that my wife needed at the time. I did go to the doctor and then to the surgeon (same one that did my arm). The words weren't said but it was inferred that it could be the worst possible outcome. Had surgery later that week. Went back a week later to "get the result" and see when the stitches and drain would be taken out. I had not yet told my wife, but had told her nurses at Holmes in case I did not show up for a couple days. Dr. Bloch came into the exam room and we had the usual, preliminary, niceties. Then, , , , "Good news, and Bad news, , , ," time. The "good" was that it was not Melanoma. We "high fived". Then, the bad. It was cancer, a Lymphoma, but the pathology was still being worked up as to which specific kind, , , ,. Crud. But, I responded with "I scoff at Lymphoma because you just told me that I do not have Melanoma". We laughed and "high fived" again. Chemo, radiation, and three PET scans later, I am cancer free. I do go see the Oncologist every 6 months, and may have a final PET scan later this year to see if they can "cut me loose"! The bright side was that with the chemo I did shave my head and at the time my wife's head was also shaved, and she got a real kick out of it. I was lucky with the chemo, I did not get nauseous, but was always tired as a used, , , , ,. But, NOTHING TASTED good, Even bottled water was Blaaaaah.

Rydyr will hopefully find his "groove" in regard to some favorite thing to eat, like I did with my green beans and pizza sauce. LOL! Is some sort of medical Mary Jane extract possible for the nausea?

But, well OK, enough of my sad story. On a much brighter note, , , , I'm getting a big hunk of Koa from the Big Island this morning!

Keep it tight, Brother.

Certon, Friends of mine grow a type of fruit chemo patients eat to make everything taste like sugar called "miracle fruit" to help encourage appetite. Let me know or pm me and I'll go get some for your son to try. Can't hurt.. http://www.miraclefruitman.com...rapy-patients.html

You family is in my prayers. You have done so much for the community that it seems unfair that this is happening. But no one said life is fair. You son has so any people praying for him during this difficult time. I hope it lifts his spirit some. Can he be the beneficiary of this year's golf tournament? That seems like the right thing. Let me know and I will be happy to help.

IMPORTANT:

A healthy natural organic diet will strengthen the immune system during chemotherapy.  All the best to you and your family...  Puff puff, pass

These are a great source of omega fatty acids, fiber, protein and other essential nutrients.

They go great in Pitaya bowls and smoothies too!

I want everyone to know that this is one of the coolest beach families there are. They are just super standup people. Me, Eddie, and a lot of other people would not be where we are today without their help. Eddie is better, and I am further along than any doctor predicted because of the support and dedication of this family. I will do anything I can to support and help and I hope everyone else will too. I just can't say enough good things about them. I have no doubt at all that they WILL overcome this. I am committed to doing anything and everything I can to help. Love you guys and I'll be praying for you every day.

Sorry to hear the news, but it's really great to hear that it sounds like everything should be fine with the chemo - as hard as that may be. If you don't mind sharing, what were the initial symptoms that lead to the doctor/hospital visit. Stay strong.

I talked to a surfing buddy today that saw this post and told me his son has a post-it note on his wall to "pray for Rydyr".  That blew my mind and Rydyr lights up when I tell him those kind of stories.  I'll answer the question on warning signs too in case it helps anyone else's little grom...

Also, there are still some unknowns with insurance but financially we are very fortunate and should be good, which is one less stress.  Thank you to everyone who has offered to help in any way and just knowing that people care is powerful.

Warning Signs: We've been asked often now, even by the doctors, which symptoms we noted before the diagnosis.  During the month of January, we began noticing that Rydyr looked pale and sometimes even a very light shade of green.  We suspected that this was due to his lack of sun exposure and maybe even the green soap he was using (sounds silly I know but we just kept saying it doesn't make sense and he'll get better like kids always do). He was also lethargic.  One week prior to diagnosis, he came down with a cold/flu after his sister Bebe had it too.  She handled it well as usual, but Rydyr became very sick and missed a week of school, which was also typical for him with a nasty flu.  He recovered but wasn't getting back to 100% and then one night he got a nose bleed that lasted longer than an hour.  On the morning we took him to the doctor, he complained about his back and chest hurting and couldn't walk across a room without needing to rest.  We thought he might have "mono" or even pneumonia, so we scheduled an appointment with his pediatrician for that afternoon.  She could not visibly see anything wrong with Rydyr other than his color.  She sent him for an x-ray and blood work.  The x-ray came back negative; the blood work results had us running for Arnold Palmer in Orlando where we began the steps that led to his Leukemia diagnosis.

Rydyr on Christmas day.  He worked diligently with focus and energy to complete this General Grievous Lego

Rydyr at the pediatrician's office one month later...  He had no energy as evident in this picture and his bone marrow lymphoblast concentration was up to 94%.

There are only around 3,000 new cases per year, so fortunately it's rare.  The scary thing is it presents itself as typical flu symptoms, except very pale skin with a light green hue, persistent aches/pains in the bones, extreme shortness of breath, high resting heart rate due to low hemoglobin, and lack of blood clotting due to reduction in platelet counts.

This is why he needed immediate blood transfusions and why I'll be setting up a blood drive on the beach to proactively help others... It saved Rydyr's life and gave him this chance to fight.

Finally, if anyone needs access to recent clinical studies, papers, or other medical records info bob3000 is the man thx bruddah knowledge is power.

edit: Get blood work done often (the whole family)... Even if it's not a worst case scenario such as our rare case, it tells a story about many potential health issues that get masked externally

Good on you, Dad. He is lucky to have such vigilant and observant parents. Unfortunately some kids aren't so lucky. Best wishes and prayers to your family and healthcare team. These blood-diseases can be very sneaky so its important to watch out for any abnormal: bleeding, bruising, lethargy, or body aches that wake you from sleeping. Sounds like you are on top of it. I'll be donating blood to my local blood bank this week.

This is not something any child, or anyone for that matter, should ever have to go through.

Hang in there Rydyr!!!

Thank you for caring, a few days ago I was out surfing with my neighbor, surfthrulife, on a dawn patrol and we were reflecting on how cool it was for the 2ndlight community to show so much support in so many ways for Rydyr and our family.

We'll be gathering on March 26 at Spessard Holland South Park in MB from 9am-1pm and I'm hoping Rydyr feels up to being there to meet anyone that's able to make it.  If we're lucky there will be some fun waves too.

It's been rough, but Rydyr never complains or feels sorry for himself or at least he doesn't vocalize it and we talk openly all the time.  He's such a good sweet soft spoken kid always following the rules, living healthy, and day dreaming about all the good things he's going to do when he grows up.

We've learned alot in the last month and it helps to accept whatever is going to happen will happen.  The steroids are bloating his stomach and face while everything else on him is emaciated from the chemo, even with a healthy appetite and trying to stay mobile with no energy.  He's also starting to lose his hair, but he doesn't care.

At one point, I was getting overwhelmed by all the "what ifs" and it was impossible to function whenever I thought about losing my son or him suffering, but now we're just going with the flow taking it one day at a time without getting caught up in probabilities staying very focused on what we can actually control to give him his best fighting chance like nutrition, stability, comfort, attention, activities, and lots and lots of LOVE.

Rydyr says, "Thank you"

One of my employees had these bands made (Orange = Leukemia) and we'll have them (free) at Spessard Holland South Park on Saturday, March 26 from 9am-1pm.

Encouraging reading all the positivity and your truths CERTON..

Dealing with a less intense, but tough situation with my little one as well. My littlest guy turns 1 on Saturday and on Tuesday will have to have a lobectomy to remove a large damaged portion of his lung as result of a rare form of Emphysema. Prognosis looks good, but nothing worse than wishing you could trade spots with them.

Keep positive.

The other day Rydyr said, "Dad, you know... I just never thought I'd be this guy."

Nobody thinks they're going to be that guy or girl.  In many cases it doesn't even matter if you live healthy or not, although it may impact probabilities.

This isn't something you can see coming even if you expect the unexpected to happen in your life and we're learning every day about someone we know that is affected by some form of cancer or other life threatening illnes either directly or indirectly.

We had a double digit turnout of friends and employees show up to the St. Baldrick's event this past weekend in Viera to shave their heads.  Rydyr got a kick out of mowing them down one by one with a huge smile on his face.

We know it could always be worse than it is today and with that knowledge we are focusing all of our energy on how we can apply ourselves to making it better.  The support from so many people around us contributes directly toward that goal, so thank you.

All in all, we're just trying to keep life normal and appreciating what we have together while we have it.  So far, so good and everyone should be so lucky.

Another beachside boy under age 10 in Indialantic just diagnosed with leukemia (ALL, same as Rydyr) this weekend.  There are historically less than 3,000 new cases of child ALL in the US annually and now it's up to 3 from Brevard county just in the last 3 months.

It may be pure coincidence, but please be aware and talk to your pediatrician about possible blood work (even if they hate needles) if you are seeing any signs of flu like symptoms that persist with aches and pains in the legs, abdomen, chest, etc and/or pale skin (light green hue and/or colorless lips), shortness of breath (low hemoglobin), bruising (low platelets), etc.

See my previous posts or PM for more detailed information.

Well, it's been 9 long months with a handful of good surf sessions with friends along the way.... Rydyr is doing fantastically well and still in remission finishing his heavy rounds of chemo in December!

Thank you all for your support and I feel obligated to say, "PLEASE VOTE YES ON AMENDMENT 2" in FL this year.

Rydyr has been taking doctor prescribed THC (Dronabinol/Marinol) DAILY since early on in his treatment to eliminate adverse side effects and all the other bogus prescriptions he had for nausea, lack of appetite, pain, mood, and sleeplessness. This synthetic THC (yes, THC) has been FDA approved since the '70s and pharma is controlling/charging us over $300 per Rx after copay with "good" insurance! We also supplement with a 1:1 ratio of CBD and he calls this combination his "MIRACLE MEDICINE", but it would be much healthier if it was readily available and all natural.

This family is getting ready to explore the world in search of waves again soon...!
