Tampa road trip with the Dave and Dave show was fun. Dr. Young's place was really nice. Very tall and mature palms and a ton of cycads. The most interesting palm was a Coco de Mer (Lodoicea maldivica). It was growing inside an atrium in the middle of the house.
Around 50 people were there and it was a nice place to check out. Its in an area of Downtown Tampa that is very nice. Well manicured lawns and old establish mansions. The 2nd stop was a half hour drive North to Odessa. This property was on a lake and nestled under towering cypress and pine. The plant sale set off a feeding frenzy and was worth the trip on the palms I got. (Golden x-mas, areca vesteria, and B. Veillierda (sp? new caledonia palm). We spent the night at a friends house and he took us out Sunset Sailing and partying in Ybor City! Nice quickee get away. unfortunately my camera resolution setting was on the lowest one (mistake of mine), thus, the photos are not as crisp as they should be. But, oh well. |

Dr. Young Passed away a few years ago. I don't know the history of Dr. Young, but someone told me he was a medical doctor. He was also a President of the International Palm Society at one time. Please correct me if I'm wrong. The property is about a one acre and was bought in 1958. Dr. Young travelled the world with his son to collect many of the seeds and plants that are still alive in the garden. His son is now the caretaker of the property and here he is on the left addressing the club.

Tour starts. It was difficult to hear the speaker along the paths, so the Dave (me) and Dave (epicsurf) show ventured off on our own path. Havanabama (jim) was accompanying us as well. I think Jim has just caught the palm bug. He has all ready been a plantsman, but the palm virus is hard to resist!
Looking up into the canopy that provides shade to the majority of Dr. Young's garden. |

The silver palm above is not a Bismarckia but a Hyphaene. Its also from Madagascar. I'm not familiar enough with the Hyphaene to know what variety this one is. Its common name is the Ginger bread palm. Jim was scouring the ground and picking up seeds from this one. This is how the palm obsession starts! It starts with a seed!

There were tons of different types of cycads. Mostly all very tall and mature, producing seed, and showing an age that most gardens are too young to pull off. I'm not familiar with cycad names so I'll just label the photos with cycad.

Looking up. These kind of gardens its best to sit down and let it soak in. Just walking around and its easy to miss something. There were a lot of stuff to take in.

Ancient triangle palm. This palm is the tallest triangle I've seen in Florida. It was very beautiful. It was near the house and had around 25 feet of trunk on it.

This is all tucked away in an urban garden not too far from the hustle and bustle of the Tampa area. Tampa is very diverse city. Neat place to visit, but a little too hectic for my taste. You can't be bored there, as there is so much to do. We ate at an authentic Cuban restaurant for lunch. Pulled pork with plaintains and black bean soup, absolutely yummy and filling. Jim just got back from Havana, Cuba, this week. So, some interesting stories and conversations took place! I did feel like I was on a vacation in a latin america yesterday! To top it off, Jim's a/c broke last night so I woke up in the sweats. Just like being in the tropics! Ha ha. Fun Tampa Trip.

epicsurf contemplating the old school diving board. The pool looked tempting! I was thinking of accidently falling in. It was hot after all and the pool would of been a instant gratification feeling of escaping the heat and bugs that were chasing us.

Hey Dave, I agree it's fun weekend!!!! We also ate lunch at Havana Village Sandwich shop ( JK told us to go there), the corner of W. Kennedy & N. Dale Mabry. Bill had Cuban sandwich and I had Steak sandwich which was very tasty. We enjoyed both gardens and the roundabout park is so intriging that they let you plant the palms there when you run out of room in your yard, very good idea!!!
