Kill it in March. Kill it now. It still dies before it spawns. What matters from a population standpoint is total annual mortality and spawning stock biomass. Fishing "spawners" becomes bad for the population when the spawners aggregate and become super vulnerable to over-harvest. Think netters wiping out entire aggregations of redfish or gag. Mini-season during the summer is probably the least likely to be affected by adverse weather. Barring a tropical disturbance it tends to be a lot calmer out there this time of year than during time of year when fronts are rolling through every week. It isn't called Lake Atlantic for nothing right now while a million people grovel at NSI because it isn't breaking anywhere else. Damonsharp already wrote it. Industry driven. Biologists don't make the rules or open/close the seasons. Political appointees do. Personally, I think the spawning stock biomass is still too low to justify opening up. The population is rebuilding nicely but it isn't there yet. Biologists would be managing this population for maximum sustainable yield which would mean we would be fishing them yet and especially not right now.

I'm sure Gary Niclaus puts his PhD in fish population dynamics to good use while sitting on the commission.

If you are so worried about mortality during the spawning season, maybe you should advocate for area closures that prohibit all bottom fishing where by-kill could occur. I bet that would go over well. These people that are bitching about the season being now would be bitching if the season was in March and they got blown out by a Nor'easter. They're going to bitch regardless. Because of people like them I think we should throw off all rules and just let things run their course. I'm sure they'll all do the right thing.

you're willing to go out after September in the VAS conditions

That's a great idea! It would definitely weed out some of the masses.

Although the best Marlin bite in Panama is December- Feb, in nasty conditions and people still pay big $ booking rooms years in advance..... Eff that, I'll take my mini-400lb marlins in May..

I think we've pretty well established that this season isn't set to be biologically optimal.

If you don't want to kill them while they are spawning, don't fish for them.

Still inform the state that hey, you're willing to go out after September in the VAS conditions and be happy with a slower bite. Try to get his buddies to express the same. If the state knows they'll still get their money, they might change it. In any case, it's not the biologists who are dumb, nor the state. It's greed on the part of the state and businesses, and alaziness/unsportin
Damn right it isn't the biologists calling the shots on this. Industry (commercial sportfishing, or what some people call charters, and the boat and tackle manufacturers) is driving this. There's people out there actually arguing that this species is worth more money at lower abundance with more boats running than with a fully rebuilt population and higher harvest. They are arguing in favor of "Maximum Sustainable Access" instead of "Maximum Sustainable Yield" as being Optimum for fisheries like this. This dopey little season is a compromise.

THAT ALREADY OCCURS!

MORON!

As for your SHITTY EXCUSE....IT"S A SHITTY EXCUSE!

It doesn't flush!

Killing massive egg producing females at the height of spawning is what MORONS DO!

The biologists are the ones suggesting that the Politicians DO IT!

IT"S YOU!

I know people who wanted Trump to open the season on the East like he did in the gulf. Now they blame the scientists. Stupidity at the highest order.

They're the ones who STATED....'DO IT'!

All the politicians did was follow the exact recommendations of the BIOLOGISTS!

It's SHIT like THIS that Politicians follow!

Fish Killer, your problem here appears to be with knowledge, not the rules, not the survival of the fish.

All science and scientists do is present findings, as they clearly have re: when snapper spawn. In fact, I'd say the biologist have given incredible insight into when and where red snapper spawn, down to amount and hours. For that, they're pretty poorly paid.

They don't make laws. They don't tell you or me to participate
