Police Had a Big Surprise in Store for Confederate Statue Vandals Protesting Arrested Comrade

On Monday evening, a group of protesters surrounded a Confederate statue in Durham, North Carolina, and some in the group made the decision to tear it down. As it fell to the ground, the crowd cheered and kicked it.
Now, three more arrests have been made of individuals who allegedly took part in the property damage. Two of them were taken into police custody after they showed up to court to support the first person that was arrested the day before.

Tuesday, Takiyah Thompson gave a press conference at North Carolina Central University, detaling why she helped take it down. She was arrested shortly after the presser ended.
WRAL reports that Dante Emmanuel Strobino, Ngoc Loan Tran, and Peter Hull Gilbert have all been arrested for their part in the vandalism.
All three have been charged with the same crimes as Thompson, which include two misdemeanors and two felonies:

Disorderly conduct by injury to a statue


Damage to real property


Participation in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500


Inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500



Tran stated they are simply following the footsteps of people who opposed "racist, fascist systems."
"We are following a historical legacy of standing up to the powers that be, to these racist, fascist systems, and we're on the right side of history," he said. "We're not going to let the police or this jail intimidate us."

Tran is part of World Workers Party, the same communist group Thompson is a part of.

Durham County Sheriff Michael D. Andrews told WCDC that officials were able to use the video taken at the protest to identify the vandals. "
