You could do the calculation and demonstrate the small effect of an extra 4000km^3. Or you could continue being a dick. Well, okay, that will never stop. [IMG][/IMG] Your representation of the ice cube is bogus! "and 1 kilometer thick (extra is in excess of what is already submerged). " You claim your ice cube is 3280 feet tall (1 kilometer)........BULL CRAP! A lie of epic proportion! I would also (if I were you) go and find out exactly how much surface area the entire earth is/has. Epic fool you are! Reference: "Larsen B During 31 January 2002 to March 2002 the Larsen B sector partially collapsed and parts broke up, 3,250 km2 (1,250 sq mi) of ice 220 m (720 ft) thick, covering an area comparable to the US state of Rhode Island.[11] Wikipedia I would further the FACT that the data stated (720 ft) thick) is the ENTIRE thickness (above and below the water) not just above! >>>>>>> From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Antarctic ice sheet is one of the two polar ice caps of the Earth. It covers about 98% of the Antarctic continent and is the largest single mass of ice on Earth. It covers an area of almost 14 million square kilometres (5.4 million square miles) and contains 26.5 million cubic kilometres (6,400,000 cubic miles) of ice.[2] That is, approximately 61 percent of all fresh water on the Earth is held in the Antarctic ice sheet, an amount equivalent to about 58 m of sea-level rise.[3] In East Antarctica, the ice sheet rests on a major land mass, but in West Antarctica the bed can extend to more than 2,500 m below sea level. <<<<<<< I can't quickly find what I'm looking for, but it is generally estimated that some of the ice on the continent is as much as 4000 meters thick. ------------------------- Dora Hates You |

I love it when dipshit argues science.
Hey Eeensteen, why is the ice shelf even separating? ------------------------- I was right. |

Pretty Trumplike. When you can't do something you attack. Sorry Ding; no one is immune to the puny ire of the batshit one. I know you don't give a shit in any case. Nor do I, LOL. I did the calculation as a fun example taking Ding's number and FK's earth water percentage straight from their posts. No idea if those are legit. No I won't give the result, sorry. Give a man a fish, etc. |

Of course I assumed for the purposes of the calculation that the cube (or berg of that volume) would be simple dropped into the sea. I am well aware of the nature of floating ice. I also did not take contraction of water on melting into account, but that's small. Obviously I didn't take expansion of the oceans into account either. The point is whether one can compute anything. |

Fishy, don't you realize that floating chunks of ice always become liquid and therefore contribute to sea level rise?

If they start out floating sea level maintains when they melt because water is an unusual substance that takes up more volume when it becomes a solid. The real problem is the thickness of land-based ice from millienia of snows. The South Pole is at almost 10,000 feet elevation and that's not because it's on the top of some polar mountain. Likewise Greenland is capped by a massive ice sheet. |

Fishy, don't you realize that floating chunks of ice always become liquid and therefore contribute to sea level rise? When you have a glass of ice water and you let it sit till it's warm....how much does the water in the glass rise due to the ice? First there was Air Jordan .
First of all, it's the Antarctic, not the Arctic.
Second of all, people have been living in the Arctic, let alone exploring it, for thousands of years.
Third of all, the Earth is just over 4 billion years old, not 6.
Last, the bar for "uncommon" isn't "happened in the history of the planet", it's "happened in history", as in since humans have been keeping written records.
This is unprecedented.
