Britain has gone a full day without using coal to generate electricity for the first time since the 1880s, National Grid says.

The energy provider said Friday's lack of coal usage was a "watershed" moment.

Britain's previous longest continuous energy period without coal until now was 19 hours - first achieved last May, and again on Thursday.

The government plans to phase out Britain's last plants by 2025 in order to cut carbon emissions.

Friday is thought to be the first time the nation has not used coal to generate electricity since the world's first centralised public coal-fired generator opened in 1882, at Holborn Viaduct in London.

Cordi O'Hara, of the National Grid, described Friday as "a watershed moment in how our energy system is changing".

She added: "The UK benefits from highly diverse and flexible sources of electricity. Our energy mix continues to change and National Grid adapts system operation to embrace these changes."

But Ms O'Hara says that while the country makes the transition to a low carbon system, coal remains an important source of energy.

According to Gridwatch.co.uk, around half of British energy on Friday came from natural gas, with about a quarter coming from nuclear plants.

Wind, biomass, and imported energy were also used."

Remember all the whining here about CFLs and LEDs?

LOL.

Both compact fluorescents and LED lightbulbs qualify as hazardous waste under California and EPA protocols

New research from scientists in California and South Korea, published yesterday in Environmental Science and Technology, shows that while compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and LEDs have better energy efficiency than incandescent bulbs, they compare unfavorably when you look at their potential toxicity (at the end-of-life phase) and resource depletion.

First, let’s be clear that the study focused on the kinds of CFL and LED light bulbs  you can screw into a lamp used for ambient lighting, not the LEDs used to light flat screen TVs or monitors (more on that later). Also, the study did not consider toxicity in the extraction or manufacturing phase – but just on the end-of-life phase, assuming they were trashed, not recycled (since sadly, most people do put used bulbs in the trash).

Because the bulbs have very different expected lifetimes, they “normalized” their data on resource depletion and toxicity potential by using data for fifty incandescents, five CFLs, and one LED bulb. Even after normalizing their calculations, the team found that CFLs have from three to 26 times higher resource depletion and toxicity potential than incandescents and LED bulbs have two to three times higher potential.

Most progs don't give a damn about the environment. They use it to further their primary agenda, which is to exert more control over those whom they consider the ignorant masses.

Well, one of my Limbaugh following neighbors still says that CFL's are part of a "plot" to manage how we live and manage our lives. Nothing to do with energy savings at all! After I converted to CFL I sold all of my incandescents during our garage sale. He bought them all.

Hundreds of thousands of people in the street last Saturday would disagree with you.

Over 700 came to Veteran's Memorial Park in Titusville.

BIOMASS...  did they burn it???

Imported Energy was used... Was the imported energy produced using Coal???

It doesn't matter. Comrade Trumpkin has the "courage and the vision" to bring back coal, big league.

Well burning biomass doesn't release sequestered greenhouse gases, and since electrify from coal is horrendously expensive I doubt anybody is exporting that.
Most of the UK imported electrify comes from France and Holland, and probably is a mix of Nuclear and natural gas sourced.

Humans release more co2 than progs allow, we should have all progs cease breathing so co2 levels will drop, Several things will happen when progs cease, budget will balance and lazy dopers will be a bad memory.

See what happens when you skip science in middle school folks.

Just read about a guy who ate fish everyday for one year. At the end, he had very high levels of mercury likely sourced from the burning of coal. Coal is not the answer to our energy needs, it's the problem we need move beyond.

Every little bit helps.

These people who scoff at science and yet profess allegiance and obedience to make beleive supernatural powers are a testament to the human capacity for ignorance.
