"In what may prove to be a turning point for political action on climate change, a breathtaking new study casts extreme doubt about the near-term stability of global sea levels.

The study - written by James Hansen, NASA's former lead climate scientist, and 16 co-authors, many of whom are considered among the top in their fields - concludes that glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica will melt 10 times faster than previous consensus estimates, resulting in sea level rise of at least 10 feet in as little as 50 years.

The study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, brings new importance to a feedback loop in the ocean near Antarctica that results in cooler freshwater from melting glaciers forcing warmer, saltier water underneath the ice sheets, speeding up the melting rate. Hansen, who is known for being alarmist and also right, acknowledges that his study implies change far beyond previous consensus estimates."

"The earth has been warmer in the first five months of this year than in any comparable period since measurements began 130 years ago, and the higher temperatures can now be attributed to a long-expected global warming trend linked to pollution, a space agency scientist reported today.

Until now, scientists have been cautious about attributing rising global temperatures of recent years to the predicted global warming caused by pollutants in the atmosphere, known as the ''greenhouse effect.'' But today Dr. James E. Hansen of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration told a Congressional committee that it was 99 percent certain that the warming trend was not a natural variation but was caused by a buildup of carbon dioxide and other artificial gases in the atmosphere."

Owwwww!

And then, , , , there still is the problem of some rather large areas of Antarctic ice that are pretty thick that rest on the seafloor. Let's say that the ice is 900 feet thick, from top to bottom, but the water depth is only 300 feet. The ice rests on a frozen, but "muddy", seafloor. The warmer water is getting under the ice and "thawing" the mud and melting ice. All of a sudden, like an earthquake, it's "slip-n-slide" time. Square miles of ice could very quickly "slip off" into deeper water and instantly displace the other 600 feet of water(+-). Sure, ice "floats, but 600 feet of ice is still going to displace one hell of a lot of water. Result: "Dear Satellite Beach; sea level is going to start rapidly rising 5 feet in X hours. And, it will never go back down, , , ,. Get over the causeways while they are still above water, , , ,.

So, , , , and, given the "10 feet in 50 years" rise info, , , , you would have to be out-of-your-mind to purchase any beachside real estate. It could be "economically worthless" in as little as 10 years.

And again, , , , most of the argument about wether or not all of this is caused by human activity is pretty much moot. Warming is now coming and the challenge is to adjust.

The South Pole is at about 10,000 feet.

It ain't on a rock mountain.

Of course, I'm not saying that will melt soon...not sure.

Hansen's publication is a "discussion" paper, not a formal journal article.  Other experts apparently differ on details, but it seems mostly to be a matter of timing.

It's remarkable that halfway reliable predictions can be made about behavior of the big Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.  They're complex. We do know roughly how fast and how the great North American ice sheets disappeared.

Record Ocean Temperatures Threaten Hawaii's Coral Reefs
By: Jeff Masters , 7:34 PM GMT on July 24, 2015

Record warm sea surface temperatures in Hawaii's waters threaten to bring a second consecutive year of record coral bleaching to their precious coral reefs this summer. According to NOAA, ocean temperatures in the waters near and to the south of the Hawaiian Islands were 1 - 2°C (1.8 - 3.6°F) above average in June, which was the warmest these waters have been since record keeping began over a century ago.

Hawaii's reefs are already reeling from their worst coral bleaching event in recorded history in 2014, when record warm ocean temperatures caused 50 - 70% of the corals sampled in Northeast Oahu's K?ne?ohe Bay to bleach.

Unusually warm waters are also in place along the northern coast of Cuba and in the Bahamas, and NOAA's experimental coral bleaching forecast gives about a 70% chance coral reefs in these waters will experience Satellite Bleaching Alert Level 2 thermal stress this summer--the highest category of danger, likely to result in widespread coral bleaching and mortality

Long term outlook for world's coral reefs: bleak
The large amount of carbon dioxide humans have put into the air in recent decades has done more than just raise Earth's global temperature--it has also increased the acidity of the oceans, since carbon dioxide dissolves in sea water to form carbonic acid. The oceans are acidifying faster than at any time in the past 300 million years. Corals have trouble growing in acidic sea water, and the combined effects of increasing ocean temperatures, increasing acidity, pollution, and overfishing have reduced coral reefs globally by 19 percent between 1950 - 2008. Another 35 percent could disappear in the next 40 years, even without the impact of climate change, according to a report released in October 2010 by the World Meteorological Organization and the Convention on Biological Diversity.

You won't be changing those carbon dioxide levels any time soon.

It's not the U.S. That is contributing the huge portions.

Better get the real culprits to bow down to your crap!

You know who they are.

You already lost!

The U.S. and Europe could go 100% carbonless renewables and, , , , it would only be a "dent" when compared to the rest of the Worlds's carbon foot print. But yes, everybody should do what they can to reduce their "footprint". But, , , , as it now stands, , , , ya better start moving to higher ground.

Yes. Probably too late to do anything about it now.
nothing to do but watch it die

US and Europe still do generate a pretty big percentage of the current footprint, reducing them would be much more than just a dent, but it is correct that the potential future emissions by China, India and other emerging nations are what will drive future impacts. That's why it matters so much how we lead and why it is a such a big deal that President Obama got China to commit to huge reductions.

Most of what is going to happen in the next 50 years is already baked in (2 degree C rise and an acidic ocean). But what we and the rest of the world decide to do next will have a huge impact in the next few centuries.

Yeah and Obama got Iran to agree to not make nuclear weapons.

You're a total joke!

The PiC did no such thing. China pledged to stop growing its carbon emissions beginning in 2030. Why do you cultists have to lie?
