"Whether you use the word or not, Americans are OK with torture because they believe it's effective at gaining information that couldn't be obtained by any other means.
The fact that the Senate report knocked down that argument doesn't seem to have gotten much traction. If not torture, what do Americans oppose? Things start to change when you get really specific. A recent post on the Washington Post's Post Everything site by three political scientists notes that when you ask specifically about techniques like "waterboarding," "sexual humiliation," and "exposure to extreme heat/cold," most Americans do oppose them. They're less bothered by "stress positions" or "sleep deprivation," which I would imagine is a function of the fact that people don't understand what they are." Why We Need the Gory Details About Torture ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

If you were suited up right now as a soldier and were caught by the enemy, are you expecting a warm reception or some sort of torture?
Ok then. Heard a quote from the guy that shot Bin Laden , he said if you can walk away its not torture. Seems we`re all about blowing people off the face of the planet for various reasons but dont twist their arm too far getting them to give up some intel? Really? ------------------------- I've decided to accept the fact - I'll always be a big kid! |

I was trained on how to handle being tortured if shot down.
because the guys we were fighting were the bad guys. They didn't give a fuck that it is considered immoral and illegal under international laws, that we signed. But we are supposed the good guys. ------------------------- "The truth is incontrovertible. malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is." -Sir Winston Churchill |

These conversations are beyond pointless and I am glad.
I am glad because I know that if our enemies are planning to do extreme damage to this country and we have someone we believe has information in custody, exceptions will be made, and we will get that information by any means necessary. What people say here doesn't matter. What you or I may believe is the moral thing to do doesn't matter. What our President says our policy is on these types of issues doesn't matter. ------------------------- "The government who robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul," - George Bernard Shaw “Don’t underestimate Joe’s ability to f—k things up.” - Barack Obama “End of quote. Repeat the line.” - wise words from Joe Biden |

You can not claim the moral high ground unless you are willing to actually hold yourself to a higher moral standard. ------------------------- "Most people would die sooner than think; in fact, they do." - Bertrand Russell "Morality is doing what is right, regardless of what you are told. Religion is doing what you are told, regardless of what is right. If I do not answer you .... nothing personal, I just have you on ignore. |
