"I think if you live in the midst of a lot of people, and I'm afraid that that semi-automatic weapon is going to fall into the hands of a crazy person, I would rather you not have it,"

However, if you live "out in the country somewhere by yourself" and want to own a semi-automatic weapon, he added, "I've no problem with that."

Dr. Ben Carson

How do you "conservatives" feel about that?

"Perhaps I didn't convey it appropriately," he said. "I wanted to convey that, you know, I've lived in urban areas. I've worked in urban areas. I've seen a lot of carnage, and I'd prefer a situation where the kinds of weapons that create that kind of carnage don't fall to the hands of criminal elements or insane people. But that is secondary to the desire to always defend the Second Amendment."

Carson said that "under no circumstances" would he "allow a bureaucrat to remove any law-abiding citizen's rights for any kind of weapon that they want to protect themselves."

If he were in a position of national leadership, Carson said he would seek to allow people to possess any kind of weapon they can legally buy, including "automatic weapons and semi-automatic weapons."

Asked by one call participant whether he would support convicted felons being allowed to possess guns after serving their time, Carson said it would "depend on what kind of criminal activity they were convicted for." He added, "Is this somebody who is still considered a danger to society? If that's the case, they probably still should be in prison."

Carson said a "mental patient" or someone with "history of violence" shouldn't be able to own "anything" to "wreak havoc on society." That, he said, could be part of a "reasonable" gun-control law. The government also shouldn't "retrospectively" go back to make once-legal guns illegal, he said.

Obama mentioned gun limits in the inner city when he was a senator and they've hounded him for it - without a break - for more than six years, maybe he should have backtracked like Carson did?

Why not just ban criminals instead?

If history has taught us anything, it's that a semi- or fully automatic weapon is preferable in an urban area. When your daughter or wife is about to be gang raped by 7 armed thugs, 6 rounds just won't cut it.

If I were a store owner in LA's Koreatown or St. Louis, I don't think a double barrel shotgun would do a whole lot of good in protecting my life or property in the face of an angry, armed mob.

That pretty much sums up the extent of intelligent discourse on 2l and America as a whole-- you have an opinion? I'm going to plug my ears and call you names, and then mischaracterize your opinion at a later date!

I believe that a person has the right to defend themselves with deadly force. Guns are a great equalizer in this respect, and I feel that an individuals right to own own that implement which enable them to defend themselves against someone more powerful trumps any negative aspect of that ownership that legal semi-automatic weapons entails. You could easily bring up stats or figures to make your case (guns don't prevent crime, you're more likely to injure yourself or an innoncent bystander than you are your attacker, school shootings, etc etc) but instead you plug your ears and namecall like a 12 year old girl.

The inability to engage someone you disagree with is pathetic. It shows you don't understand them, and moreover, that you probably don't understand why you feel the way you do, at least not enough to publically defend your ideology.

Why do you limit your opinion to semi auto?

The 2nd amendment doesn't and Carson doesn't either..

The truth is I don't, it's just that typing it out every time is hard-- almost as hard as reading whole threads.

Did automatic weapons exist when the 2nd amendment was written?

Did the internet  exist when the first was written?

Automatic weapons are a more efficient way to defend your life, especially if you're outnumber. For most of people, that will never be a reality, and I'm envious of those peope. For those of us who've seen how the other half live, the idea of a mob storming thier house isn't some paranoid delusion, but rather an unfortunate fact of life
