The air force just put up in new signs on the beaches. A friend posted on facebook a photo of the one at hangars. It says, "Hangers Beach". LOL

Matty B : Please elaborate ? Are you referring to Hanger 800 ? I would have thought that was a given ? ( You can not miss the Hanger in the First photo I posted )

Pierless/hangerless! I remember being out there when the U-2 would take off and give us jet blast!

My dad used to take me fishing on that pier. Hurricane Cleo wiped out the inside half in 1964(?). My buddies and I used to spear fish off the end (and, boy, there were some big sharks out there that would drive us out) until the AF had the Navy blow it up in fall 1974. It will forever be "The Pier" in my memory and stories. (Added advantage is that it Fs up newbies when you start talking about The Pier.)

JOES - Most of the places I grew up at have been renamed. History lost -

Lum's - Perkins
Hamburg House - Grant Ave
Patrick Pier - Hangers
O'Club - Breakers Beach(?)
AP Shack - 2nd Light
Mark Realty - Paradise
Gulf (Beach/Station, always debated) - Sea Gull
Hess - (no name that I know of)
Canaveral Pier - CCB Pier
and probably a few more that I can't think of

Joe ..... the file size for the 3rd pic is too large and throws the whole tread out of whack, I didn't want to take the time to resize .... but it is a great pic!

I prefer the spot south of the NCO club. I guess you can also refer to it as "old" AFTAC. Either way, prepare to name the new landmark for it

I do appreciate the new decking at the beach access though

Off of the museums Facebook: Bob Lehton surfing the mythical Patrick Pier. Bob had broken off the nose of his Campbell surfboard earlier, but kept surfing it anyway- 1967. Photo by Roger Scruggs

Thanks for the photos all. I thought the name referred to clothes hangars for some reason, but that cleared it up.

So does Hangers Beach represent another name change? It's so sad when the names of surf spots change. Waves go to crap and newbie kooks move in.

Word is climate activists are lobbying for a new name for Pipeline.

"Some time ago", , , , , we were driving back down A1A from 13th Street (16th wasn't cool yet) back to SPS and, , , , , we had Never really ever looked at The Pier because up to that point the APs would really harsh you for being there, , , , but, we see people surfing the North side. Grass median U-turn. Paddle out and I see this tall lanky guy named Mike paddling straight for the end of the pier. He drops in and had such a very nice right, right in front of me. My first drop and bottom turn, , , , it was an "image", , , , I'll never forget, , it just flashed at me that it was a 'perfect' right. It was lined up like I was a Pro!

We were sitting in a small crowd of just about every Name in town!

Such a fantastic day. The South side was not even worth riding compared to the North. The next day was more of the same.

We used to call that spot "Missiles". On big days you could use them as lineup markers. Could check it from my cube window in 989, until the post 9/11 security mods forced us to check from the stairwells
