Had to make the decision to quit using polyester resin. Will start using only epoxy once I get home and get my garage back into working order.

Be careful touching epoxy with bare skin, I became allergic to it with bad rashes after glassing one board. Cant use it ever again. All the best.

Not sure if you use acetone w/ epoxy, but I recommend not using acetone at all with epoxy, not even have it in the house. Not for thinning, cleaning tools, surfaces, anything. Disposable gloves, disposable brushes, re-usable plastic mixing cup is the way to go. Orange hand cleaner for the occasional oops on your skin but otherwise keep it (epoxy resin) off your skin, use long sleeve shirt/pants or even tyvec suit if you're really messy, but prol don't need that if you're just doing a small fin.

Heavy gauge nitrile glove: check. Acetone only for required cleaning. Disposable lab grade mixing cups. Disposable brushes. Straight alcohol for epoxy thinning. Apron: check.

"Acetone only for required cleaning. "
Not trying to be a NIA/nitpick but fwiw: some 411 from Mr. Epoxy Like your fins by the way, any tips on foiling? I've tried coarse grit discs, bastard files, surforms; all either way messy or require lotsa elbow grease..... Edited: 08/04/2018 at 11:55 AM by IamSAW |

Yes, foiling was a total pain in the, , , , ,.
Finally broke down and bought a cheap 6" X 48 belt sander from Harbor Freight. Use 36 grit for heavy work and then an 80 grit for "finer" stuff. After foiling on the 36 grit belt, I smooth things out with an orbital/dual action using 60 to 80 grit. And yes/no, I generally do not use acetone anymore. ------------------------- Dora Hates You Edited: 08/04/2018 at 12:10 PM by dingpatch |

Isn't the sanding additive for epoxy resin really nasty stuff?

DP-
Glad to hear you'll be back making fins.
If you have a chance, try some Greenroom epoxy.
I am close to finishing my first 3 gallon batch of Old#7.
No Add F, no thinning, easy to sand, easy to recoat.
As far as cleanliness goes, put gloves on before the caps come off the epoxy jugs.
Wipe gloves off with paper towel after pouring and other times they get messy.
If I spill on myself, citrus type soaps or isopropyl alcohol. No acetone...
Looking forwards to seeing your new fins!
