Southwest can do $266 and up for long stretches thru at least October, Copa $274 and up. That's higher than the lowest fares to Los Angeles, equal to San Diego (but there, the lowest prices are invariably Frontier). For the adventuresome, there's good October prices to Shannon, Ireland via Boston on Jetblue and Aer Lingus, as low as $587. In a total change from last year, United is offering economy fares of $290 (not basic economy) to Portland, Oregon all summer and into fall. Even on short notice, like June 1. Surfline is figuring 5-6 ft around then, water still 55. |

I'll take Ireland, thanks. Actually we may fly in there this time and go over to London from there instead of flying into Gatwick.

I got to spend several days at the beach in Lincoln City, Ore. last month. 54º water, about 50º air. 4.5 mm wetsuit worked fine. It was pretty busy and, being cheap, I had the tiniest hotel room I'd ever inhabited and water time was limited. But Ireland looks attractive. Went to Cornwall via Heathrow to Paddington to train straight to Newquay. Neat town with a variety of beaches facing different directions. Water was also about 54. |
