Saxon was surfing one morning and he was 14 or 15 and was just amazing at such an early age. His Dad was a huge influence and mentor who is super dialed into everything surfing and surfboards. After watching Saxon ride a couple of waves getting tens and heels at ease I asked him "Do you have a surfboard shaper or a sponsor?" He said, no but you have to talk to my Dad he is right over there...
Lucky for me and perhaps for him he started getting me to shape him boards and it has been a great collaboration between him and his Dad wanting very specific highly tuned classic long board shapes. With their input and Saxons test riding we have put together some really unique amazing shapes for someone at a higher level of surfing that is true to what the Duck tape is really all about.
Now, you have to realize that Saxon had shapers constantly throwing boards his way trying to sway him over to their camp. So far overall he has been riding for the most part exclusively my shapes that are specifically dialed in for his needs. There is something to be said for finding a good shaper and getting them to hone boards that really work for you individually. In this day and age of mass produced and heavily marketed MBA driven surf companies this is still a valuable notion and art for the true to surfing individual.
I have been mentoring his Dad (Alex) in the shaping room and he is already shaping some really nice longboards. Saxon has been doing some shaping as well and he is onboard to start shaping some longboards in the very near future.
Saxon models: Cobb roller (Pig type shape), Perch model (refined classic 60's style nose rider) and more to come...
Once again cheers to Saxon and his well deserved attention for his incredible ability, personality and expanding potential in and out of the water.

In this video Saxon is riding the Cobb Roller. It's a refined pig. If we ever get waves again and you see me or him out feel free to ask to catch some waves on it. It's currently what I'm riding as well. No concave and has some slight v, it's pretty flat over all with some roll in the tail. It still nose rides extremely well. |
