Dick was always throwing coach-speak and life-speak out in those days. When your elders spoke, you listened back in those days and people like him were worth listening to if you cared about surfing, especially East Coast surfing. In fact, I cared so much I put my money where his mouth was and -at 23- decided to run the very district Ke11y, Todd, The Colonel, Billy Mac, Rich Rudolph, Bill Johnson ... and all the rest surfed in, yes the ESA CFL district. And damn we were good!.

R.I.P. Dick Catri (1938-2017) ~ The Godfather of East Coast Surfing

Dick is survived by four beautiful daughters. Cherylnne Catri Kirby (oldest from 1st marriage) and daughters with Shagg: Kimberly Catri Cullen, Keri Catri and Kristen Catri Finn. Please keep his girls in your thoughts and prayers and help us celebrate his life on June 10th

I was offshore with a friend this past weekend who spent a lot of time on the water fishing with Catri back in the early 2000s.  

He said, "Dick was was one of the few people I actually enjoyed when they yelled at me."

Our district in the mid to late 80s had as much talent lb for lb as anywhere in the world. It was a special time to be a young surfer around here, even if you were just a regular kook like me. I think Dick kicked that off and mahalo to RC for his contribution.

Just something to think about Col. I was older than you guys and you were all kind of the upcomers. Kelly was just a kid. He is now in his 40s. No one has mentioned Bryan Stamper and I think he was on your team?? A lot of years have gone by and I recognize people in the water and we have to do a lot of fill in the stories because one person remembers one thing and the other remembers something else. Just my 2 cents.

As for Dick...

I have a pic of us when I was in the Boys division and I am in my 50s now. I really see no difference between he and my blood relatives. A big loss.
