I can remember (barely) seeing Kelly with a very young JJF probably when he was less than 10 years old and saying "there is a future champion" or something like the "next Slater". Amazing he could see this way back then.

In 1978, while playing backgammon with a buddy at what is now "Slater Way" and up walks little Ke11Y with his black and white boogie board. My buddy, ever the talent scout, tells me that this little guy rips and he even stands up on that thing.

I remember saying something like, "good for him, I'm sure he rips" ... well, there you go. There are just some kids who it's easy to see the God given talents.

My take on John John is how cool he was with Ke11y, even when Ke11y was beating him. He will make a great World Champion and hopefully many more to come.

I feel blessed to have been able to watch a preteen Kelly surf many times then also witness preteen JJF surf dozens of times. Both were very polished and radical before 13 years old.
