Barry was a great guy.
Always up for a paddle out.
He was 59.

Anyone have a good way to water rescue a downed surfer in order to get him to shore quickly? Would be good to share to help prevent tragedies like this. At least he died doing what he loved. RIP
So sad to hear. I would expect SBPD to maybe check Publix security cams in case he was parked there, and they can match him to a car that's still there. Surfer Magazine had a rescue article about 15 years ago. Part of what I remember was a can-opener type of move to get the victim on a board. Sort of a leverage move that involved getting a board partly under him, then flipping the board over, where you could at least try to clear lungs in calm water. Seems like the fastest way in is a tandem belly ride through whitewater. I would think attaching a leash from someone's board to the victim's leg is a good idea. If he gets separated again in the impact zone, it helps find him, and maybe pushes him to shore as well. (Assuming he's not already connected to a leash.) Another thread with CPR links and water rescue tips would be an honorable gesture in his memory.

You flip your board upside down, grab the victims arm pinning it against the board and flip the board upright towards you. This leverages the victim onto the board sideways after which you can position them so you can paddle them to shore.

Thx Jetty. As one of the guys who swam Barry in today and began CPR on beach, I can say that it was not easy to do in a swell with an unconscious person and I'll file that board-flip info away in case I ever need it again. I didn't know Barry but my prayers are with his family, can't imagine how hard this is. I had friendly small talk with him earlier this morning out in the lineup and he seemed like a really nice guy. Satellite Beach police and fire rescue did great job trying to resuscitate him, I'm sad to hear he didn't make it.

That's sad. And it's a little unnerving knowing that he was fit and went just like that.

It's better to go fit than aching and sick. (If you have the choice)

Brother, when you get a minute, could I get a list of the words that trigger these fits?

Hey. Where are we going? (And what are we doing in a hand-basket?)

When I was 17 my father was telling my brothers and I we would not be surfing when we are grown up.

Well, I guess we all failed that test. Barry was obviously in it for the long haul like the rest of us!

God bless Barry and so many condolences his family.

Barry had lately been stoked riding a slick 6.6 RC @ RCs.
Sunday night he texted that he finally gotten one good ride at Perkins.
At 4:AM he's excited about the buoys.
Sounds like he got a few last ones in.

Sorry for your and his family's loss. I lost a close friend in much the same way about 3 years ago now ..... massive heart attack while surfing.

I am Barry's neighbor and helping coordinate a paddle out for his family. His wife, Kim, is overwhelmed by the responses she's read here and heard from his friends. I spoke/planned with them tonight and they would like for anyone who knew or surfed with Barry, and anyone who did not but wants to pay their respects to attend his paddle out this Saturday at Hightower. I will have a small PA speaker if you care to chime in witha few words, or even share the slight meetings you had with him. The funeral is not until next weekend and she wants to do this for the local surfing community that knew and knew of him. To send his spirit off properly.

I am looking for someone willing to grab a few aerial video clips to use in an edit of the morning. You can PM me if you are interested and what your fee is. I'll be shooting pics and I have someone lined up to film on land.

I'm also wondering if anyone has some heliconias or bamboo they'd be willing to let me trim. Doesn't have to be much, just trying to dress up the setup for them. I have some traveller palm leaves which I'll jam in the ground for starters.

If I don't respond to a PM, e-mail me at skimr@hotmail.com if you are willing to donate, help me set up, help folks paddle out, etc.

thanks - Brad
