My buddy Darryl went on a surf trip to Dominican Republic last week and never came home. He was reported missing on Thursday and he was last seen Wednesday afternoon near a surf shop in Cabarete on the north coast. If anyone knows anyone down there that could help, please have them call leon 809-969-770.

Here's an update I posted on Facebook:

Here's an update on my friend Darryl. No luck finding him yet unfortunately. They have been searching every day down there with the local authorities. They've gotten a lot of good clues that they are tracking down. A lot have been false but any additional information is helpful. It has now been a full week since he went missing. We know he was at the beach checking the surf Wednesday morning, We know he was at a mall/surf shop around 3:30pm. There were also reports that people saw him jump in the water around 5pm near Eze beach bar in Cabarete. Divers combed the bay and reefs there and the DR air force is helping search from the air. Still nothing. Some reports that possibly he may have shaved his beard but I don't know. Family is being flown from the embassy up to Cabarete to continue the search today. Choppers will be flying along the coast just in case. Thanks to all who have spread the word. If anyone is strong and smart enough to make it back it's Big D!

I've shared this on Facebook, I have friends with friends in the Dominican Republic.

My sister and mother of 4 has been missing from the Melbourne area for 10 years next month, I can relate to the pain of not knowing what happened or if they're still alive, prayers up for your friend to be found safe...

To me, this story sounds very suspicious in many ways. I don't intend to make light of this in any way, but sounds like there's something more going on here than just a guy surfing who went missing via a surf related accident. Here is what has been reported. A friend last saw him at a surf shop, but "lost track of him" - how do you lose track of someone at a surf shop. A Dominican air force officer said that he had talked to him the day before and felt he was acting paranoid. He may have shaved his beard. This all sounds like he maybe either wanted to disappear for some reason, or that someone else wanted him to disappear for some reason. Not suggesting he was a bad guy, or anything like that. Just saying there's something more going on here.

This one is bizarre, so I asked one of my employees who is a native Dominican what he thought and this is exactly what he said (I'm just the messenger)...

"It's strange. . I don't see how he hasn't been sighted ... I doubt he would blend in with the natives. . They should get his face on the local news tv and paper.. pay if they have to. Offer cops a reward too. Money moves everything in those placez.  Try to get the highest ranking officer and make sure they do everything they can to work with them."

All if it is strange to us, and his family.  A lot of things don't add up. Could there be foul play? sure.  Could he have hit his head and is wandering around, sure, could he have gotten in with some bad people and the worse happened, sure. Anything couldve happened because we have few details right now.  His family is down there now helping with the search and they are tracking bank accounts and finally got a court order to get phone info.  
They do have the local authorities helping, local air force flying beaches, divers diving reefs. There is a reward, it's been on local TV here and over there, newspapers, social media...everything we can think of. 

People have been helping down there tremendously but it's been 9 days now...and still nothing. He would NOT leave his mom and dad hanging like this if he just wanted to fall off the grid.

It doesn't seem like a big place down there, someone had got to know something. whether is be bad or good it would be nice to know.

Any updates? I sure hope they find him and he's ok.

I think its human nature to assume that the victim must have played some part in his disappearance or that he was buying drugs, chasing a local drug dealer's girlfriend or just being an ugly American, but the fact is he is gone and his disappearance needs to be totally and thoroughly investigated without any preconceived notions. 6'5" in the DR is unusual in itself. I wish them luck and speed.

any news? man I hope this ends well!

 

unfortunately Darryl is still missing. They have run out of leads too. The good news I guess is no bodies have turned up anywhere. There have been some murders of tourists there recently but they always find the bodies somewhere. 
 From all I've been reading, Looks like that place is pretty sketch. Tourists are robbed and if they fight back they are killed. For nothing more than a gold necklace sometimes. Seems so stupid.

It's been over two weeks now, hard to hang onto any hope. Super Bummed...Darryl was the first surfer I met down here when I moved back to Florida.

I hope something comes up though, would be tough for the family if he just vanished without a trace.

I have never left a friend behind on a trip and have missed flights because of friends doing dumb shit.  It doesn't add up. 

I am surprised the friend hasnt been detained. 

If this was some girl from Alabama on her senior trip, it would be national news.
