I screwed myself and watched this video the other day:
http://youtu.be/l7a57AyuWFI
Now I can't stop thinking about retro fishes... I'm thinking I need to buy one. :/
I'm looking for the fastest board I can get! Does anyone have an info on Tom Neilson's "classic fish"? Thx!

I love the outline of it

Never tried a retro, but looks quite loose to me. Just expect a lot of time getting used to it. I love fishes in general though, and after getting used to them, I no longer really like surfing standard shorties anymore.

I love my Chris birch fish. It's perfect on those numerous onshore chunky days.

Just my 2 cents but there are a ton "fishes" out there and they have their good and bad points but to truly get the traditional fish speed and flow you should look for someone who can replicate the Lis outline. And in my opinion no one does this better than Larry Mayo. His Lis style fish is almost a perfect replica and provides for an absolutely amazing wave riding experience. I rode mine all through this last run of waves, even on the biggest days and it was magical.

I recomend one of Starr's retro fishes, they are priced very well and they are very fast and fun. Go to core surf and talk to Dennis about them, mention my name (griffin)

the best thing i ever did was come to the realization that I'll never surf like the guys on tour, so theirs really no reason to be riding the same boards as them. I'm riding twinnies, single fins, quads, LB's, stubby weird little things, beak nose boards etc... Pretty much everything except for the standard performance shortboards that I grew up on. The fun factor has gone up 110%. Just some food for thought.

I have three twin fins. If you don't have one, well... Never mind.
A 6' 2 Chris Birch poly with glassed in fins, stu sharp 62 AMT twins and my newest acquisition is a Channel islands Merrick twin fin MTF. This is a 1995 Rod Muchado design that was resurrected in 2009. It also has glassed fins. Seen here:

Does it count as retro if your "retro fish" is
stringerless epoxy with modern concaves on the bottom?
Neilson (retro?) Fish. One of my all time favorite boards.

Not sure the hydrodynamics of it all but I have never found any advantages to a twin over a quad, except it being looser (too loose in most cases so not an advantage IMO). I was curious if the two less fins (less drag) gave any additional speed? If not the loss of drive to me does not seem worth it as it is tough to predict how hard you can push them in a turn before they break loose, where as a quad holds much better and slides with a tad more control IMO. Other than wanting to do 360's anyone prefer twins to quads?

@tom it totally counts as your 'retro' fish has the 'retro' outline
@stokedpanda Theres a major difference in Twin vs Quad to me, but mainly depending on what board you choose to ride... A Kookbox twin pin, or a twin keel fish? Then you have the design and foil of the fin to look at, consider MR twin fins..

I agree, but my only issue over here is when we only get a "good wave window" for a couple days of good surf I don't want to be trying to figure out my board for half of the swell.. On another note that dude in the vid was having wayyyy too much fun. Talk about connecting with your board.

Nice looking board Longboardsndonuts.
You've got some other nice looking boards too. Any time you feel like selling one of those, let me know.
I recognize you (based on your instagram stuff)...surfed with you at a somewhat secret spot in north boca area on a refraction swell last year, I think. You were on a Pavel; your buddy (maybe brother, not sure) was on a Griffin. I was on a Mayo round tail quad. Was a really fun day.
Anyway, back to board pron and discussion of fishies.

i never really understood the purpose of the swallow tail. Does this just make it easier to turn since its so wide.

I believe a swallow gives you the longer rail line fo say a pin but the looseness of a squash. Kind fo blends snappy turns with a rail that can hold in a steeper face.

The wide swallow tail allows for a wider tail. Wider tail means more surface area and that =more speed. The tail also gives the board some hold when you lay it over in a turn Think of that tail as a pin tail. This was the what Lis came up with after looking at the very fast yet hard to turn planning boards of Simmons. Lis wented speed and the ability to turn. The wide split tail did just that. the Keel fins held the board in the wave. Now the modren fish benifits from better rockers and fins. The speed dialer set up workes great.

Loved this comment! wider than aunt jemima, and thicker than granny's glasses Lol

when I ride my twin with glass=ons, it's a dream everytime. It's 5'10, wider than aunt jemima, and thicker than granny's glasses. I can sit outside with the longboarders, and rip it all the way to the beach. Never losing speed, unless I dish it on purpose. Speed, wave-count, and fun are increased while the guys on chips are scratching their heads....

That comment is fantastic KP!
I recently fell back in love with one of my Mayo Twin Keels. I recently purchased a single fin mid length and have been loving that but I took out my twinnie during the good day of the Hermine Swell (went up to Playalainda for those nice offshores) and the twin was on fire! Barrels all over the place and just super cruisy fun.
I'll always have one in my collection for sure.

I have a lis inspired fish I shaped 6 years ago, still get a smile every time I take it out. I picked up a bat mod retro twin a few months back. Popped some of the al merrick twins in, board turned into instant magic. If you don't own a retro style fish you are missing out.

Unless you own a surfshop, how do actually ride that many boards (particularly similar vein) we hardly get surf?

Owning a surf shop would only detract from all the time we get in the water now.
Living on the ocean running things from home allows quick quiver xfers during all day sessions whenever there's a bump and I do like to switch em up as my mood and ocean conditions change.
Between Father's Day, Labor Day weekend, and a few other sneaker swells here and there all of them have been ridden this summer alone. We haven't been traveling since our son's diagnosis in January, but things are looking to return to semi-normal by end of this year and we'll be global again paying ridiculous amounts for board fees.

And that's just the fishes...
Current quiver is 100% handshapes, except the 5'11 Slater/Tomo design Sci-Fi surfthrulife hooked me up with recently. I use it exclusively for hollow high tide shorepound sessions... Fast, responsive, invincible.
