Birch has incredible skills for sure.

Yep, he sure does. I have been having problems getting to my feet for the past two years and this was one of the efforts - a bit wider in the hips so I could catch it earlier. Unfortunately, while it worked, it didn't solve the problem. I will be the guy out on a soft top bellying across the wave. Humbling, for sure. Probably closer to humiliating.

One of the Playalinda crew, Dennis, went kneelo on his longboard forever. Ain't over till it's over.

Thanks for the kind thought. I always thought I'd be the guy still surfing well at 80. Humbling if not humiliating. "Who is that kook??" I guess the circle is now rounded - 60 years of surfing and I'm right back where I was at age 9 - a kook.

I was reading Barbarian Years and the author said something like ageing for a surfer is the slow process of becoming a kook again. Someone had written in the margin "so true". I'm one of the old guys kooking it up and intend to continue doing so for as long as it's still fun. See you out there i hope.

Now that you mention it, I remember reading it. Too damned true.

Funny thing though. I had been frustrated and pretty angry each time I went out for the past year or two. One factor was the bottom just sucks and the other was I was just freaking slow and stiff (despite yoga, swimming, etc). But, this last swell, I gave up trying and just bellied a bunch on my longboard and got the stoke back. And, the bottom was really good. Long lefts like we used to have before beach "renourishment". So, the stoke still lives. Just have to keeping blowing on the embers.

Was looking for the exact Finnegan quote regarding becoming a kook again and found this - "There is nothing sadder than a former surfer". Couldn't find the Finnegan quote, but he has a bunch of others listed in the five or six lists of best quotes about surfing that I found.

The Finnegan quote - I keep it tacked over my desk: "Unfortunately, my surfing was in decline. I was getting old. I missed waves I should have caught, lumbered to my feet when I should have sprung. Getting old as a surfer, I'd heard it said, was just a long, slow, humiliating process of becoming a kook again."

I'm not sure if Tom and I had the same copy, but if not, someone wrote something like "too true" in mine too. I think I got the copy I read out of the library, but maybe from a friend. Wherever I got it, it surely rang as the truth.

And, now, it is just above mine. I also have a couple of nice photos of Central America to remind me of how it was. Not sure if that is good or not.

In a Peter Cole interview, he was responding to a remark, so great you're still surfing at 70. His response was, " Oh, yeah, you can still surf at 70, if you want to surf like a kook." I've since read where Peter does not surf his beloved Sunset any longer. He stated he had to quit because he had become a danger to others in the water.

Yep, nothing like being a surfer and getting old.
My pop ups now are not so poppin'...I think I need an ADA compliant surfboard.

Bakc to the for sell -

Thanks for the plug, Bamboo. It is a quality board, I am just not a quality surfer anymore and not able to take advantage of it.
