I hear the feed has been a problem, and homegrown chickens aren't laying.
I've also heard the largest egg producer in the US is also the largest feed provider for said chickens. The largest egg producer's profits are blowing through the roof. ------------------------- I was right. |

Isn't capitalism wonderful? Once it's no longer regulated, if you're one of the lucky ones you can build a monopoly and cash in.
As far as the chickens, be careful in handling and exposure to feces, there is a risk of salmonella. Otherwise I'd say if you've got the space, it would be awesome to have fresh eggs, just wash your hands. ------------------------- Capitalism is based on the ridiculous notion that you can enjoy limitless growth in a closed, finite system. In biology, such behavior of cells is called "cancer". |

Cut's way down on organic garbage too. The things will eat anything.

I raise them at the farm. Have 50 or so of the devils. The first and most important thing is the coop. You basically have to have a Ft. Knox if you want to keep the varmints out. If you are raising them from chicks, you'll need a heat lamp for a while. Need to pay some attention to the breed that you get. If eggs, you'll go one way, if you are cooking them up, another. Otherwise, they are pretty easy. Just get them food and water, clean out their coop fairly often, and they should do fine. They are fairly low maintenance.
If you want to start from scratch, I could give you some fertilized eggs and loan you an incubator. Of course, you could get all roosters that way. Probably the best way is to go to Tractor Supply or some other feed and seed store and buy female chicks.
For the record, feed isn't a problem and they lay plenty of eggs once they mature if you get the right breed.
Am happy to answer any other questions that you have.

One of our local guys was overfeeding them and getting double yolks in most of his eggs. I had no problem with it.
