The argument is the term "marriage" carries with it a religious context of a union between a man and a woman.

Gay couples were upset because they could never receive the tax breaks, never be allowed to visit their loved ones in ICU, or reap any of the OTHER benefits associated with being married (which I totally understand).

The compromise is to allow a civil union in the eyes of the law, that would allow them to reap said benefits without disrespecting the religious context of calling it a "marriage."
But noooooo.....that wasn't enough.
