Yep, even if it only helped save a portion of those 3000 souls.

I'd say many people on 11 September 2001 did as much as they could have to prevent the terrorists from succeeding and killing more...their sacrifice went well beyond the minor inconvenience of wearing a mask.

The people on United Flt93 rallied together and fought the hijacking bastards the best they could. My brother knew the captain on the flight, Jason Dahl, pretty well, and I casually knew him. Contrary to what some righty-right types have proposed his death was real, as was his family's grieving.

I am confident that if the passengers on the other flights believed their plane would be used as kamikaze weapon they would have done the same. The people on the other three flights thought it was a normal hijacking. The people on flight 93 had a heads up that the towers had been hit by commercial airliners, so they saw their likely future and responded to prevent that. Nobody cared what political party another belonged to, they heroically worked together as a team.

At a time when nativism could have stirred hatred and violence against people perceived as outsiders, I saw Americans reaffirm their welcome to immigrants and refugees. That is the nation I know.
At a time when some viewed the rising generation as individualistic and decadent, I saw young people embrace an ethic of service and rise to selfless action. That is the nation I know.
