I was right.

It's weird that even Trump knew this war and these chicken hawks were bad. Trump was the only one who called the Iraq and Afghanistan wars out at the 2016 debates. All other 16 candidates were still towing the party line. Trump, ever the showman, knew how to play the crowd and use this singular issue to differentiate himself with great effect. This was the kryptonite of the other candidates. It was a position they simply could never take. Trump postured himself as wiser than that and beyond it. He was not. That was clear by his later moves in the Middle East, but this was an issue he could and did win within the GOP and a pivotal moment where the wars were then universally criticized as failures and rank and file GOP leaders had to nuance their assessments of those failures as not their own but human nature. They still are.
