PALMETTO, Fla. - When owners abandoned the Piney Point phosphate mine in 2001, they left behind an 800 million gallon problem.

Elevated ponds called gypsum stacks are full of contaminated water produced as a chemical byproduct of mining. And getting rid of 800 million gallons of toxic water isn't easy like State Representative Will Robinson said in December.

"We've been trying to solve it for 10-20 years and nothing has happened," said Robinson.

Once again we have private profits with socialized costs. Phosphate mine put lots of money in someone's pocket once upon a time. They probably lived large, lined the pockets of politicians, and boasted about being "job creators".
Now it comes time to pay the price for the environmental damage they passed along to the public and they seem to be nowhere in sight?

Tell us, how much money of the so-called infrastructure bill is earmarked for shoring up phospate holding ponds? Let's face it, most of that money is going down the toilet. Very little of it will go to projects that are actually needed. Do you guys think that Biden and the dems will want to help Florida and DeSantis? Nope, I assure you that they are fervently hoping that the spill occurs.

I'd say it's probably too late since the poo is being pumped into Tampa Bay as we speak and the Pugs are planning to try and block the infrastructure plan anyway.

At least in China if you're a CEO and you're responsible for a disaster like this they put a bullet in your neck.

The GOP had the presidency, the house and the senate and all they talked about was infrastructure. Mitch Mcconnell's wife did plenty of optimistic talk. Instead they gave a tax break to the rich that cost the rest of us.

Tampa's tourism contributes about almost $7 Billion into the area.

Every promotional photo or video shows pirate ships in the bay,
sport fishing, beaches and waterfront bars & restaurants aplenty.

Yet, for 10 to 20 years this environmental ticking bomb has been
waiting to explode.

With the mismanagement of the Indian River, Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades,
I think El Pablo is right: Florida doesn't deserve any of this infrastructure windfall.

But... the fossil fuel industry got a $8.2 BILLION taxpayer bailout for COVID relief last year - yet still slashed nearly 60,000 jobs.
